After the storm

Thanks Cheryl Dennill for these pics from the trails today.

The edges are deceiving.....

Both highways contractors used graders to wing back the roads after the last major snowfall. In some spots it is hard to tell where the ditch starts. When I went to town Sunday, there were two tracks where vehicles had gone in the ditch. When I went to town yesterday, there were two additional tracks - one with an AIM truck in it. I stopped to talk to the driver, but spared him the embarrassment of a photo.

The new village contractor has done a good job of clearing the roads to full width. He is learning the edges. I stopped to talk to him yesterday, thanked him, and told him not to go any farther in front of my place - he had cleared a few inches over the ditch.

September Oops!

I met Rob and Nicole taking Mom up the chair in early September, and asked for a photo. Somehow I missed the photos arrival on messenger. Better late than never.

I think the whole family is enjoying mountain life.!

The Burn Pile November 27th

Thinking of the early '90's this morning..........

Below a certain temperature, a heater had to be put into the Baldy T-bar drive station to warm things up before the lift was started. No "soft start" those days. It was a big lever to push and pull.

Pre-1976, there was no electricity at Baldy. Diesel powered lifts, and a diesel generator for the lodge.

When CNCP telecommunications built a network of microwave installations across the country, a deal was struck with Mt. Baldy Recreations Ltd. and the power utility to bring power in. The line to the summit crosses the ski run just above Rod's, then goes straight up the lift line to the very top. (armored cable.)

The original power installation through the village served us well for a number of years, until many more cabins were built. After the Christmas Day turkey brown outs, the infrastructure was upgraded.

Friday

Clean forest floor - ground and ladder fuels were incinerated, so ground is fairly clean after salvage logging.

Can't see it from this photo, but there has been a fair bit of grooming already.

That moment........when you think you have finally outsmarted a squirrel....

I have been trying various squirrel baffles on my bird feeder in recent years, only to find the squirrel still gets into the feeder. The current baffle is floppy, and appears to be the right height to foil the critter. Now he just runs back and forth on the railing, waiting for a bird to knock down some seed.

Thanks for the plug, but don't tell everyone........

Thanks Dick Smith for the link.

Puzzling

While I was gone yesterday afternoon, there was one set of fresh footprints in and out of my place. No note, nothing left, doesn't look like anything missing. Anyone who knows me, would expect that if the truck isn't there, I am not home.

A few weeks back, a couple (with dog in vehicle) stopped at another home on my street, and the comments made to the dog, that were overheard, would indicate that the people do not know who lives there.

There have been door to door JW visits up here in the past, but they were asked not to come back to my house.

If you had someone at your door yesterday, or know who it might be, I'd appreciate the info.

I will be making camera adjustments, but I would like to know who was here.

Weed Delivery At Big White?

Castanet reporting that a Cannabis company is making daily deliveries to Big White..........

I was the only person from Baldy to attend a public hearing on Baldy zoning for pot shops. Like many areas in the RDKB, there is no zoning permitting pot shops at Baldy, and a person wishing to open one would have to go through the whole zoning and public hearing process as well as the other regs.

"The Glow"

It is not up here - appears to be hot slash piles in the vicinity of Old Camp McKinney Road. Lots of flame illuminating the smoke.

 Thanks for the link, Sage.

Strata Council Meeting

An updated agenda and zoom link has been provided. Strata Members may choose to attend as observers.

Will be interesting to see whether or not the new issue is handled simply and quickly.

Never ends............

Monday

Light dusting of snow overnight, base measurement on the side bar has been adjusted for the settling since the big storm. Remember this is in my yard, not up top.

Now this is a feel good picture.

Fireworks - 6:00 - 6:30

Heads up - not sure the occasion, but a firework will be set off in the base area around 6:00-6:30.

Anyone with fireworks who wants to combine and make a little show is welcome.

Coming up on Opening Day..........

Coming up Next Weekend

I have not so fond memories of this one. Our brass ensemble was asked to play on the street one year. It was incredibly cold, and one of the group was a no show. I had to play the trumpet part on my euphonium by ear. So hard to keep the horn warm and my fingers moving.

I am so tempted to go to this one, although it is a little far. Cindy Smith, daughter of Baldy builder Terry Smith, does incredible wood work, and awesome baking.

Hiring Ski Patrol and Trail Crew

If you have your standard first aid, know how to shovel, pack snow fencing, poles etc, you could apply for Colleen's trail crew team. Higher first aid qualifications are required for Patrol.

Bonus Early Opening Weekends

Now that I have committed to a 3 year old's Birthday Party, Baldy is slated to open without me.

Partnership - Seasons Outdoors in Grand Forks

Seasons Outdoors has partnered with Baldy on a few things - one being the contest won by Doug McMynn for a new pair of skis.

Seasons will have some demo skis in the rental shop for you to try out.

Looking for a Ladies Ski? In the ticket office are a few pair of Ladies Head Joy Skis. The shop does not have the jig or bindings for these brand new skis from last season, but it may work out for you get the skis at a reasonable price, and get bindings and mounting at Seasons in Grand Forks.

Season Pass Pick-up

Quick and easy today. If you know where your last year's pass is, they reload it. Of course I know where my last year's pass is - I didn't wash my jacket at the end of the season.

Season pass pick up and retail sales will begin November 16  to the 22th and there after will be Sunday, Monday and Tuesday until December 16 from 10am until 4:00pm.

Retail and Christmas Shopping

I had a look at the retail displays in the ticket office today - lots of Christmas gift ideas. Giro and Smith brain buckets - I've had both, and love the Smith one I use now.

Cordless Drill found on the road...........

One of the BMR crew picked up a cordess drill ( no battery) on the road. If it is yours, e-mail me with the make, and I'll connect you to the fellow who picked it up.

Nice surprise, made my day!

It did not surprise me that MMT would come, but I am particularly pleased that the young maintenance team would call on him for some training on a maintenance procedure that they had not done before. Nice sunny day to be at the base of the Eagle.

Photographer Ron Hiller lives at Sidley Mountain - he sent his drone up 400ft above his house this morning to see if this was another one of those days where Baldy is above the clouds. Thanks Ron.

Ron and I have known each other since Grade 1. Both classmates of our Firesmart Assessor Doug MacLeod.
