Last Day is April 1st, I just might change my mind..........

I had decided not to ski anymore this season, as yesterday I found some hard stuff that was a little jarring  for my ankle.

Visitors from Calgary and Vancouver skied this afternoon and were happy with just the right amount of softness. They went out at about 1:00. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer, so I may try a run or two.

Disappointing news on the groomer front.........no more grooming, last day of the season is April 1st.

OUCH! All three grooming machines out of service...........

Not the news anyone wants to hear. It should be an awesome powder day tomorrow, but no grooming hurts. Back in the olden days, we would round up some youth to do some ski packing. It wouldn't take long to do the carpet.

I won't volunteer to organize it, as it may be a little risky for me to go out on ungroomed runs at 7 weeks.

Take it easy on the road

On my way to town this afternoon, I encountered a two vehicle collision - there was an ambulance on scene, and two individuals standing on the road. RCMP and tow trucks not there yet. All cleared when I came back up

When it warms up, those well sanded spots melt quickly, and there are sections of compact, interspersed with sections of slush

On my way home, I saw tracks over the edge in the canyon. When I stopped, I saw enough foot prints to indicate that the occupants had come up the bank - there is another car over the bank from an earlier date.

I did it.............

On Tennings, dead broken tree below the race start point. Screws or nails in trees are dangerous for chainsaws, chippers and other mechanical devices. Even with "Uncle" Bill's help, we were unable to retrieve all the screws that held the memorial plaque on this tree. The flagging tape I put on last spring is gone - hopefully this will last until this tree is removed.

15cms and counting, this storm cycle.

Kelowna Puddles

I know it is wet in Kelowna - my great nephew is stomping in the puddles. So, if you love skiing as much as I do, forget the garden and golf course. It has been snowing all day, and it is still coming down.

Sweet Turns on Sugar

More runs groomed today, kids hooting and hollering in the trees, and some great turns in the fresh snow. My best turns were powder turns on Beaver, before I had to pick up speed to get home.

I did Jones twice - once for Barb, and once for Lex. When I ski alone, I think of the people behind the run names  - one run for Willi, one for Uncle Paul.

It is still snowing, and looks like a good powder day coming up Thursday. Lots of snow forecast for Friday, so could be a great powder day Saturday as well.

Sunday and Monday forecast for sun - should be easier to find the golden Easter egg.........

I am happy to have winter back, to make up for some lost time.

"Free Shipping"

Believe it or not, I just had a courier from Lake Country deliver a UPS parcel to my door! I had been watching the tracking to see how far I would have to drive to wherever it was dropped off.

Another good-bye, until next season.......

Some fun groomer runs this morning with these two. Kendal starts his long journey home tomorrow. We look forward to your return next season.

A few rumblings on the hill from people I don't know, and from the odd local - wanting a little more groomed variety on the Lump. First choice Jones.

I'm just happy to be skiing again. I know what the per hour groomer cost was a dozen years ago, I can only imagine what it is now. The best thing we can do to get more spring break grooming is to invite more friends to come and ski Baldy.

Monday Report

According to someone who skis pretty much every day all season........Monday was the best spring skiing day of the year. The weather, the snow, and the Ponderosa groomed.

That's a Wrap - Last "Baldy Babes" of the season

Hello Baldy Babes,

Beautiful Baldy Blue sky with feathery clouds, perfect temperature, new snow, champagne, no time restrictions, led us to the Hut today. The total snowshoe: 8 kilometers, we were hungry.  Lunch really tasted good today ordering off the menu.

Thank You to all the Baldy Babes for snowshoeing with Cheryl, Hilary and me this winter. We loved every Monday exploring our beautiful mountain with you all.

Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces next winter!

South Okanagan General Hospital emergency department closing overnight - Oliver/Osoyoos News

South Okanagan General Hospital emergency department closing overnight - Oliver/Osoyoos News: The South Okanagan General Hospital emergency department will be closed overnight Monday.

Why ski?

 Origin Unknown

It's that time of year when there is plenty of good skiing left, and some have moved on to other things. One resort has offered reciprocal to all season pass holders around the globe. One resort has offered deals for season pass holders of certain low snow resorts. Silver Star is promoting its end of season events, and Big White is advertising discounts. I saw a post yesterday of one of WB's lift load areas without a line up. Some areas have had to close early with low snow.

In our area there is golf and farming drawing locals away. Yes there have been some fine days in the valley, but there is a lot of good skiing left, and my valley activities can wait.

It has been a weird year for me missing 6 weeks of the season with a non ski related injury. I'll be out there until the hill shuts down. As much as I don't want the season to end, I'll be happy when most have left, and the village is back to quiet off season mode.

I said goodbye to one household yesterday - I hope more owners do what they have done. While packing up, they made a plan for their FireSmart activities when they return after the snowmelt.

..........and the forecast says.........

Light snow starting this afternoon, varying amounts in the coming days, and not too warm.

A Message from our GM, and update on our Alpine Operations:
Dear Valued Manning Park Resort Guests & Supporters,
It is with great regret, that I inform you today, MPR will be ceasing Winter Alpine Operations end of day Sunday, March 24th, 2024. Despite the heroic and at times herculean efforts of our Alpine Team this season, Mother Nature has dealt us and many of our industry colleagues, significant blows with the abnormally low snowfall combined with unseasonably warm weather. Despite all our efforts, we simply don’t have enough snow to safely continue our Alpine Operations.
I want to take a moment to thank you, our valued guests, for your tremendous support during a season that provided many twists and turns and made us wonder if we would have a winter season at all. Your patience and understanding as we strived to provide you with the best possible experience during these difficult times, was appreciated more than you can imagine. Your positive comments throughout the season, pushed us even more to keep the season going as long as we possibly could. Our team truly wishes we could have made the season last longer for your enjoyment.
We have been blessed with very favourable Nordic conditions this winter and we will continue to offer our valued Nordic patrons a few more days of operations. Nordic operations will be closed from March 25th-29th and will reopen for one final weekend this season, from March 30th to April 1st, 2024. We hope you will take this opportunity to enjoy our beautiful trails before the season ends.
I hope to see you out this weekend for Springfest 2024. Please feel free to stop by and say hello or drop me a line. I am always interested in speaking to our valued supporters, to see how your season went and what we can do to make your MPR experience an even better one in the future.
Thank you again for all your support and I look forward to seeing you soon,
Vern Schram

Forecast Update

The next couple of days are forecast to be gradually cooler, with some cloud cover to ease the softening. Snow in the forecast for Friday night and all day Saturday.

This Date, Last Year

Last day of captivity...........

Six weeks of captivity will be behind me as of tomorrow. I await the return of cooler temperatures and some fresh snow, so that I can toss the medical boot, and put on my custom fit ski boots. They will provide better support for my recovering ankle than the medical boot.

Thank-you to all of my friends and family who have helped me through this difficult interruption in my ski season.

For those who don't know, this was a driveway slip, and not a ski injury.

"That helmet saved my life! "

Thank-you for the call this morning Steve, it was so good to hear your voice.

Passers by stopped and helped attend to Steve. He would like to know who they were, so if you were there, please e-mail me your contact info so I can pass that along to Steve. unbaldy@gmail.com

Steve and friends were skiing Chix Dig It, and he followed someone else's track to transition to the Baldy Trail. He caught an edge, the right ski came off, the left ski came off, and the last thing he remembers is slamming down on his chest and skidding across the Baldy Trail. He was unconscious for a short time.

He will be in a neck brace for many weeks, but otherwise is mobile, and grateful.

You will keep seeing this photo - Steve intends to have the helmet displayed for educational purposes.

I went to school with Steve's younger brother. Here is a photo taken by brother Jim back in our high school days.

RIP John Greene - Tree Well Loss - Red Mountain

Less than two weeks ago, there was a news story of a 76 year old Rossland local who lost his life in a tree well at Red Mountain. CBC Radio today identified him as John Greene, brother of Nancy Greene Raine.

John was a businessman and volunteer for all things Rossland and Red Mountain.

I did not know John personally, but visited today with a friend who went to school with Nancy.

I post this for one reason only - you can ski a mountain for your whole life, know it like the back of your hand, and still end up in a tree well.

Skiing the trees and meeting up at the lift is not really skiing with a buddy. Time is of the essence when a tree well is involved - best to know where your partner is.

I looked at his Facebook page - he has a 2014 photo posted of himself smiling in a tree well.

Down the Baldy Road

I've posted a few times about the FESBC project down the Baldy Road. The pulp mill in Castlegar and the OIB are partners. Trees are mechanically spaced. Timber that is not merchantable is utilized for pulp or hog fuel. Part of the plan for this project is to make the Baldy Road safer for an escape route.

Last "Official Baldy Babes Today" one more next Monday

Hello Baldy Babes,

Monday is our day! Our last official Baldy Babes snowshoe led by Cheryl under Baldy blue skies and warm temperatures. Layers of winter clothes peeled off and the coolness in the trees felt wonderful.

We said "Good bye and great adventures" to Chloe. Please keep in touch!

Next Monday, we will meet at 10 in front of the kiosk. Lunch will be off the menu.

Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces next Monday.

Take Care, Marian

Wake up call........

While the media has been full of notices recently of controlled burns with BCWS and First Nations, today there is other smoke. Human caused wildfires east of Lumby and west of Summerland.

Helmet absorbs some of the impact..............Thank-you for sharing the photo.

Take a good look at the photo. I don't want to imagine what the head would have looked like if the skier had not been wearing a helmet.

A member of our community sustained season ending injuries last week. Yes, that is a hospital blanket in the photo, but he is now in the recovery phase at home. There is no doubt in my mind that his injuries could have been much worse without a helmet.

I don't know what shape the tree is in, but grateful that he had the helmet, was skiing with friends, and was found right away.

I asked for a photo, and appreciate that it was provided.

Hang in there, I know the healing time is not easy. We look forward to your full recovery, and seeing you back up here this summer.

Skiers trigger large avalanche in backcountry near Big White Saturday - Kelowna News

Skiers trigger large avalanche in backcountry near Big White Saturday - Kelowna News: A large avalanche was triggered in the backcountry near Big White Ski Resort Saturday morning, but no one was injured in the large slide.

Three Things - to make the most of the spring days......

  • Dark glasses or goggles
  • Sunscreen
  • Wax on your skis or boards
I have used canning paraffin for years. When it is warm, I don't scrape and rub the bases to smooth. A few irregularities in the surface help to prevent suction from the moisture content in the snow.

I read an article decades ago, about one of the World Cup champions - someone analyzed the wax on his skis - something like 99% paraffin, and 1% dirt.

In 5 more days, my 6 weeks are up. Conditions now are setting up to a repeat of February 6th - the sun is creating ice around my truck, and in a few days there will be snow on that ice. I will be careful, and will pick a good day to go out.

A note from AIM Facebook - posted 4 days ago

We understand the condition of many gravel roads in our service area. The mild winter has brought unique challenges for maintenance. The repeated freeze, snow & thaw makes for extra saturation in the road base. Continued freeze and buildup of permafrost holds the road base together, we haven’t had this which is unprecedented. Typically gravel roads are frozen for the majority of the winter season and thaws in the spring, this year has been repeated freeze and thaw with minimal to no permafrost. To protect the roadway, we cannot surface grade the road when the temps are warm and moisture is high or when the temps are too cold. The integrity of the road base is weakened by excess water. Roads will experience thawing at different rates based on site characteristics such as temperature, exposure, soil and road construction materials, moisture levels in the roadway, topography, drainage and local weather patterns. Once excess water has been removed from the road base, and the road has been determined to be structurally sound, we can surface grade. This is also why load restrictions are implemented to protect the road base. At this point, AIM in partnership with MoTI, are continuously monitoring our roads for changing conditions and will schedule grading as conditions allow.

About snow hyphen forecast dot com

I've commented before that I look at many forecasts, and go with the one that tells me what I want to hear.

Snow forecast is one that I look at daily. I find that it is very accurate on when we will get snow, but not as accurate on the amounts. If I see two or three consecutive time period showing 2 or 3 cms, we usually get 10 cms or more.

If I see a forecast of 13cms in one time period a few days out, I refresh the screen a few hours later, and it will have changed.

The snow removal contractor follows the NOAA Bonaparte forecast.

There are are a number of forecast links on the side bar.

Monday

Hello Baldy Babes,

The weather cooperated for our Eagle Chair ride to the top this morning. Hilary led 13 Baldy Babes reaching the original Baldy Trail, jumping the ropes to the Bench, buried under all the snow and giving us a view looking at the West Bowl, the fire scars and the Town of Oliver in the distance. Following the Baldy Trail down to the Dead End Trail on soft, fresh powder under our shoes was lovely in the trees with the sun in our faces.

Today's lunch:  Beef Dip with fries, Caesar salad or Broccoli Cheddar soup, desserts and wine, delicious!

Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces next Monday.

Take Care, Marian
