Oliver hospital emergency department to close for 2 days this weekend - Oliver/Osoyoos News: The emergency department at South Okanagan General Hospital will be closed for a large part of the long weekend due to a doctor shortage.

Update - Paul Dumoret Celebration of Life - When Dale says be on time, he means it.............

Paul Dumoret UPDATE: We just wanted to give a quick update on dad’s celebration of life on September 9th at the Oliver airport. It will be starting promptly at 2pm, so if possible, try and get there a little early so we can get everyone situated. There will be plenty of seating, but as we are expecting a rather large crowd, and you are worried about missing out on one of the available chairs, please bring your own seat. In lieu of, a guest book, we are putting together a book in which you can share stories of dad, as he always had a good one. We would like to include pictures if you want to bring some.
Water will be provided, but please bring your own snacks and drinks 🍺
We will see you there.

Thank you, from the Dumorets

Sad News - Baldy Family - Brennan Eby - far too young

Our thoughts are with Paul, Barb, Stephanie, Annika and all the family.

For decades, Paul captured the happy moments of many local families as a professional photographer. Barb was at the counter at OK Photo to lend an ear to so many when they lost loved ones - coming into the shop with a tattered photo, looking for magic to create a good image.

They need our support now, as they face a future without Brennan.

Brennan E. Eby

February 24, 1984 ~ August 24, 2023 (age 39)

With sadness, we announce Brennan Eby’s untimely passing just shy of his 40th birthday. Brennan was a beautiful and kind-hearted soul, who cared deeply, and loved fully.

Growing up in our small town of Oliver, British Columbia, he developed a strong bond with the place and its community which he carried with him even as he moved to Southern California, lending his talents to improve California’s power grid infrastructure, shoulder-to-shoulder with his work family at the Rising Edge Group.

His generous spirit and zest for life was a light in our lives, and while his passing leaves behind a void for us all, his legacy will forever shine bright. A special place in his heart was reserved for his niece Annika, who represented for Brennan a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility which he took seriously and gave him a reason to buy puppies for someone else.

Brennan is pre-deceased by grandmother Donna Mann and grandfather David Eby. He is survived by his pup Syrah, parents (Paul and Barbara Eby), grandparents (Philip and Eleanor Smith; Kathleen Eby), sister (Stephanie Eby), niece (Annika Eby), aunts and uncles (Joan and Leonel St. Amand; James and Shirley Smith; Kathleen Smith and Chris Gutsche-Smith; David Mann and Lisa Van Colen; Doug and Cathy Mann; Brad and Pat Eby; Alan and Gwen Eby; and Peter Eby); and half-brother (Keith Nelson). We will remember him as a loving dog-dad, son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin, and most of all, friend.

In Brennan’s memory, we ask that you celebrate his life by taking your dog for a walk, watching his favorite movie “I Am Sam,” or enjoying a medium rare steak with a charcuterie board on the side. And if you are a single young lady, make it a point to chat with the next single guy walking a pup all by his lonesome – you’d be making that dude’s day.

Fire Danger

After last night's storm, we are back to a Fire Danger Rating of "1" or low.

Target on my back?

Strata minutes out today - member complaint about uninsured RV's parked on common roads. In case you haven't noticed, ICBC stopped giving out decals some time ago. There are two travel trailers that have been regularly parked in the village this summer - one of them is mine. Of course my trailer is insured - for the whole year, not just seasonally. I am approachable, as is the owner of the other insured trailer.

If the fire danger rating had been lower this summer, I would have been out with the trailer more often, and you know the trailer is stored off site when the weather turns.

The majority of this community is getting along, and enjoying being on the mountain.

Rest in Peace Rick Crowson - we didn't see this one coming - golfing Thursday and gone Sunday

This is a tough one for me to post - Rick was a few months younger than me, and I've known him since the early days of Baldy. I will be adding more photos, and probably stories in the coming days, but as the news travelled quickly, I got permission to post today.

Husband, son, brother, uncle, ski racer, coach, golf pro, and an all ‘round really nice guy………….

Our hearts are with his wife Diane, dad Mike and Virginia, sister Pam and John, nephew Shayne and Rebecca, bonus sisters Rhonda and Kevin, Sage and Mike, and nephews Sebastien and Nathaniel. Uncle Bill and Laurie, and the whole extended family.

Rick passed away the morning before his 66th Birthday. Rick has had health issues , but we sure didn’t see this coming – he shot a 71 on Thursday, and Sunday morning he was gone. A warm smiling, genuine friend and family member. When I think of Rick, every image in my mind is with a broad smile.

Rick was a devoted husband, family member and friend. We feel shock and sadness, and know that there is now a huge hole in the Crowson family.

Rick was an amazing skier, racer, and coach – racing at Baldy in the ‘70’s with the Vancouver Ski Team, and later coaching the Baldy Nancy Greene Team

He did work at Baldy in earlier days, but Golf was his passion, and he loved his career as a Golf Pro and in various Golf management positions.

Celebration of life will be Saturday, September 16th at 1:00 p.m. at Penticton Senior center.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at the heart and stroke foundation or cancer society. Dress is casual!!

Rick was a great emcee - It is so hard to believe that I am the only one still alive from this Baldy 25th Anniversary photo.

Surprising Mike on his 70th Birthday

BC Winter Games - 1985 - Fore Runner - we think that is Hollie R and Jennifer B in the back ground.

Last weekend coming up for outdoor operations..............

Lots more activity............

Great work by community members who are expanding their FireSmart work on their properties. Let's hope that the fire situation this year will spur others on to deal with excess fuel and debris on their properties.

It is not too late to book a free assessment.

Danger Rating

Two days at "3" after four days at "2". Forecast for Tuesday night should fix that.

$%^&*( Mother Nature

You may recall me posting about the storm that woke me up 3 times in the wee hours of the morning last week. Apparently the biggest bang affected both chairs. The Eagle is fixed, and the Lump diagnosed. Next weekend will be the last weekend of summer operations, with the BBQ Saturday and Sunday.

Follow BMR on Facebook to see if the parts come in time for Lumpy to run next weekend.

Benadryl? Out of the Trail

What do you carry on your summer hikes? A group of locals were out yesterday, and believe one of them stepped on a ground wasp nest. One was stung on the hand, a second had multiple stings. They took a rest at the cabin, and fortunately there were two benadryl capsules in one of their first aid kits. Their reactions were pretty dramatic, but they made it back down to the village where some topical benadryl was stored. They had bear spray with them, but were surprised at the wasp attack.

'It was a violent event': 13 members of Wilson's Landing Fire Department lose homes to wildfire - West Kelowna News

'It was a violent event': 13 members of Wilson's Landing Fire Department lose homes to wildfire - West Kelowna News: Thirteen members of the Wilson’s Landing fire department, including its chief, lost their homes in the McDougall Creek wildfire.

The media coverage on the North Shuswap people staying behind has been extensive. I do sympathize, but those who are not formally trained and equipped may not understand how much more extreme fire behaviour has been. The video in the above article is an interview with a Fire Chief who lost his home, and had to pull back under extreme conditions.

Fire Danger

 5,4,4,4, and yesterday down to a "2" today "2"

A thorough soaking................

I drifted in and out of sleep early this morning - wakened by that very loud noise of a cloud burst on a metal roof somewhere around 3:00, 4:00, and 5:00am. I did see some flashes of light, and heard some thunder, but only one sounded close. I wasn't awake enough to get my phone and check the lightning tracker. At one point I did see 3.9C on the weather station.

I was really only semi conscious and wondered if it was a dream, but there is lots of evidence this morning that we got a lot of water.

I've had messages from Westbridge and Kelowna this morning, indicating that they had lots of moisture last night as well.

The power of fire...............

Today is a good day...........

I have never been so happy to wake up to fog. Word that another friend's home has been spared. Fresh fruit delivered from across the street, and gift of firewood from next door.

Fire Danger Rating

Three days at a "4" - next reading posted 2:00pm tomorrow. Two hour fire watch recommended after high risk activity.

Oh yeah...........

Water falling from the sky!

Lightning Tracker show that we had a couple of hits on the back side, and maybe a dozen to the north of us.

From CBC - Stolen Gear from Structure Protection

In response to question on post below

Currently there are no fires close to Baldy. We are heavily impacted by smoke from fires south of Keremeos, near Twin Lakes, and Kelowna.

There are links on the side bar where you can check for info, and their is a BC Wildfire app that you can download.

We are hopeful that the forecast moisture starts this afternoon.

Evening Update from BCWF

The BC Wildfire Service continues to respond to the McDougall Creek wildfire (K52767) adjacent to West Kelowna, the Walroy Lake wildfire (K52808) adjacent to Glenmore and the Clarke Creek wildfire (K42815) on the west side of Lake Country.
These three wildfires have become the Grouse Complex under the management of an Incident Management Team. Response efforts continue to be unified with West Kelowna Fire Rescue, Kelowna Fire Department, Lake Country Fire Rescue and the Regional District of Central Okanagan.
Across the complex responder safety and protection of critical infrastructure, life and property continue to be the priority for all agencies. Structure protection personnel, engines, water tenders and trailers from communities across the province have been arriving throughout the day, along with additional BC Wildfire crews, to support structure protection and structure defense efforts. Structure protection involves the triage and set up of equipment for the protection of properties and critical infrastructure, while structure defence involves suppressing active fire as it advances towards properties and critical infrastructure.
For more information on structure protection during wildfires visit: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/.../wildfire.../structure-protection
The video attached shows a number of these structure protection resources that arrived first thing this morning, gathering in West Kelowna for their in briefing before heading out to the incidents in the complex.

Heavy Traffic on Wildfire App

The BC Wildfire Service is currently seeing record demand in global user traffic to our app and desktop map products.
This includes a level of interest from users outside of British Columbia that was unexpected and is currently challenging our ability to consistently serve the Evacuation Alerts and Orders map information. We understand this information is of critical importance to impacted communities at this time.
While we work to increase capacity to service this user demand, we want to make the public aware of alternative sources of this information that provide redundancy for this situation.
If you experience issues accessing the BC Wildfire map or app, you can access this information via the EmergencyInfoBC Map available here: https://ow.ly/aurY50PB8KX
Also available in text-based format here: https://ow.ly/65EQ50PB8L6
Thank you for your patience while we work to address these unprecedented demands as quickly as possible.

Bear Aware

I don't follow the community Facebook pages, but I have been informed that a rather large bear has been spotted on Tree Trail eating huckleberries.

Update at 11:00am on Castanet

Grizzly EXT station shows a Fire Danger rating of 5 or extreme for today. With that station being north of us, not sure if it would be affected by heat and fires north of us.

BC Wildfire Update

Twin Lakes

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to the Upper Park Rill Creek wildfire (K52813), located approximated 10 kilometres west of Okanagan Falls. This wildfire is estimated at 100 hectares in size and is displaying an organized flame front with moderate to fast rate of spread.
Four Initial Attack Crews and three single resources are on site, as well as three helicopters, heavy equipment, airtankers and skimmers. Structure protection crews are assessing and triaging for structure protection.
