The Eby Collection

Before digital cameras, we all spent a lot of time at Paul and Barb's photo business in Oliver. Paul has captured some memorable images of Okanagan scenery and many weddings. Barb is sorting photos - here is a teaser of what is to come.

I have thousands of Baldy images, and some of them are from Hulton, Lang and Fairweather collections. On my to do list, is to sort label, etc etc. Ernie Rotheisler has also promised to lend me his collection for scanning.

For those of you who are newer to the hill, there are two publications of Baldy History. One was prepared by Marge MacLeod for Baldy's 25th Anniversary. There are many interesting articles in it from founders of the hill. Many cabins have a copy. I have scanned the booklet and prepped it for printing as a magazine. When I have time, I will post info and see what the interest is in doing a print run.

The Baldy 50th Anniversary Book was published by BMR, with Deb Klamut and I providing most of the photos. You can order it online through Blurb, ($$$), but when I have time, I will be talking to Brandan about inventory and pricing.

Too many other things on the go right no.

Vancouver Island Friends

I have a ticket to Natalie MacMaster Celtic Family Christmas for November 19th at Port Theatre in Nanaimo. A show has been added for Vernon, so much less cost and time for me. I don't think the show is sold out if you want to get a ticket for a friend. Let me know asap, so I can mail the ticket to you.

Bags of Sand

By the time I went looking last year, all I could get was a very fine sandbox sand. If you are looking for a couple of bags for the back of your truck or driveway, I saw some at the Canco(by Tim Hortons) north of Oliver. If any one else knows of places that have them, please comment and I'll add them to the post.

We are a community.........

We all want what is best for our community, and our special place here at Baldy. I challenge every person in the community to stop the he said/she said, stop making judgements on rumours, and have an open an honest communication on our differing points of view.

We can disagree on issues and still be respectful and kind to others.

We have an AGM coming up next weekend. We have a council of hardworking volunteers who want the best for Baldy. There has not been consensus within council on a number of issues for some time. Some believe it is time for a change.

There are members of the community who expressed concern with the way the elections were run last year, and are not satisfied that their concerns have been addressed.

Some owners have become more interested in the strata goings on after what they witnessed on the Town Hall Zoom.

Every member of the existing council has been an owner or member of a family cabin at Baldy for 34 or more years.

We have a lot of new owners in the village, and some have expressed interest in running for council.

One owner is an experienced Property Manager, and has started a private Facebook page for a polite and respectful exchange of  information between strata owners. If you would like to join the group, the communication forum is now searchable. You will need a Facebook account, and there will be some verification questions.

BMR News

If you are not signed up for the BMR newsletter, you can do so on their website. Info is also posted on their FB page.

If you didn't buy a season pass, check soon to see the expanded list of "ERA", enhanced reciprocal benefits.  There are also punch passes available for a limited time. Check out the rates - punch and season tickets are much better than the day rate.

Baldy Jobs

Baldy is not immune to the hiring challenges in the industry and elsewhere these days. The postings are on their website. The vacancy that concerns me the most right now is the mechanic opening. The cats should be moving through the shop. The posting is for a heavy duty mechanic.

Accommodation is always a challenge - if someone in your family is looking for full or part time work, please have them apply and contact Brandan. resortservices@skibaldy.com .

Remember Spring Break last year? Shortage of lift operators to run all the lifts? Only at Baldy does a family member on vacation hear about the shortage in the bar, and step up and become an operator.

Low Key Road Check

I came through a road check at the bottom of the hill tonight - around 6:30. I didn't even realize what I was approaching, as there weren't a bunch of flashing lights - just reflective clothing and red cone flashlight. The back end of a pick-up full of wood was sticking out on the road.

When it was my turn to pull ahead - it was a license, insurance, alcohol check. The pick up had been directed to pull off by the mail boxes across from the Petro Can.

Anyone who still believes in "road pop" would likely get caught. Not the usual place for a road check.

YRB Washboard

The YRB section of McKinney Road, and onto the Baldy Road to the mountain is getting progressively worse with washboard. Add a little snow to that with no snowbank safety nets, and there will be problems. The temperature is forecast to plunge in a couple of days. If you would like to voice your concerns to YRB and hopefully get a grader up here, here is the link.

Saturday - Halloween Party in Oliver Today

Monday

Bentley and Leo have posted a Halloween message on the cabin owner's Facebook page. Give the dog and cat a little affection, and they will give you access to Halloween treats.

"If anyone is wanting to trick or treat on Monday, we will have goodies left out on the porch all day, a happy dog and cat to pet, and a little free library of books to check out. All ages are welcome! Happy Halloween!"

Village Snow Removal

Info provided by Hometime this morning.

"Michael Bakker, our new snow removal contractor has been busy clearing our roads.  If you are interested in discussing your driveway, his phone number is 250-718-1836."

*Note: Baldy Bobcat is still doing driveways in the village.

Wednesday

Interesting sky over Harvey's cherry block.

I was pleased to see the AIM grader on McKinney Road yesterday - it is pretty good, but a little rough down close to the pavement.

The YRB recent grading has taken a bit of a beating, likely from the loaded logging trucks hauling up.
It is rough and muddy in the canyon - if someone comes down too fast, they are going to have a problem.

Transfer Station

I have a modified "bear resistant" food digester, so I don't use the dumpster much in the warm season. No surprises when I took my recycles down this morning.  I still have my utility trailer up here - waiting to pick up my snow blower from pre-season maintenance. If the stuff is still there when I take the trailer to storage, I'll nab someone to help me load, and take it to Rock Creek.

Interesting combination of not allowed material in the dumpster, and I picked up cardboard from the ground with the clear label of a Greenwood Business on it.

Contractor Looking at Fortis Lines

Beautiful Weekend - Lots of Work Done

Klamut and Crowson properties got a lot of Firesmart work done this weekend. This is not the first time around - they do some work every year.

Sage and Mike were a great help at the Crowsnest, but you know Mike, at age 86 he wasn't about to stand around and watch.

Photos stolen from Sage.

Update from Rosie

Rosie's people are doing well, but very tired. JB is happy to be home and improving every day. His nurse is tired too from all they have been through. What a relief to be watching improvement.

Firesmart Update for Mechanized Tree Removal

The most recent Community FireSmart newsletter has not been sent out. My hunch is that it is because of one of the following reasons. The Strata Council is consumed by the sewer and AGM prep, or perhaps, because I did not include the statement that the Strata Council will have to approve the program. I left that out because of two reasons - one being the formatting was done before I had the input to include that. The other being that one member of council has made his intentions known that he will not allow it to happen.

Those who expressed an interest in this cost saving tree removal process deserve an update.

The actual newsletter has the name of the contractor in it - I have left that out here as it is a publicly available blog. The lumber prices contained here are out of date. We are fortunate to have RPF James Graham on our committee.

Option for Selective Mechanized FireSmart Logging at Mt Baldy

Contractor J presented to the Fire Smart Board the numbers he has put together for selectively Fire Smarting lots at Baldy with his logging equipment.  His calculation takes the gross revenue from selling the logs and subtracts his mobilization and demobilization costs, his machinery costs (fuel, lubes etc) and his profit margin.  This leaves the net cost for the property owner.

J analyzed the financial end of doing this work based on the following assumptions:

§  Current log price paid by Vaagen Fibre Canada is $110 per cubic meter of solid wood.

Ø  This price fluctuates up and down significantly depending on the lumber market and it is currently on a downward trend.

§  He has assumed that at least 20 lots will commit to employing his services and that he will cut approximately half a log truck load from each lot.

§  He estimates that it would take approx. ½ to ¾ of a day to complete each lot.

§  He will not deal with the waste (brush, tree limbs, dead and down timber).

§  If log prices are lower or higher when it comes time to do this work, then his estimate will change.

§  If a particular lot has significantly more solid wood volume, then the cost to that property owner may go down somewhat.

§  All metal (fencing staples, wire, nails etc) must be removed from all the trees on each lot prior to J arriving.  Any metal in a log causes sawmills to totally shut down and can be fatal to workers if run through a sawmill.

§  Each lot to be Fire Smarted must have the property boundary thoroughly flagged to avoid trespassing on neighbour’s property.

§  J will determine which trees to cut based on his long experience in this.  Therefore, individual trees will not be flagged by the property owner.

§  J will do this work next summer as soon as soils dry enough for his equipment to work efficiently and with minimal soil disturbance.

Based on the above assumptions J has estimated that each lot will cost each property owner approx. $1200 to have this work completed. This cost estimate may increase or decrease depending on log prices next summer.

J has many years of experience in selection logging and has done mechanized Fire Smart logging throughout the Boundary Forest District over the past few years.  If interested people can view his work for the Village of Midway and at Jewel Lake near Greenwood.

Prepared by James Graham RPF ret’d.

Next steps:

If you have not already indicated interest in this program, please e-mail Sam and Rod.

If you have a vacant lot, J would like you to stake your potential building site.

If you can locate your corner pins before the snow flies, that will speed things up in the spring.

Think about your trees – which one might have a nail from an old bird feeder etc.

There is a heavy fuel load on deep lots between Porcupine and Cougar. We walked this area with J and two of the property owners, and will be consulting with adjacent owners for a path to remove fuel.

Winds whip up the fire - jumps Similkameen River

Thankful, One day at a time..........

Thanksgiving has a special meaning today - our friends across the border have had a very difficult journey for too long. A step in the right direction today. I just received a text and photo evidence that surgery in Wenatchee went well this morning, and JB is resting comfortably. One day at a time.

Sending love to Rosie and her people, and looking forward to better days ahead.

Thanksgiving - Baldy Family

Great to reunite "Team Atomic" for the first time since the pandemic.

This photo, April 1, 2006. L-R  Rylan, now an engineer. Sayre now a lawyer, and the other one, now a senior citizen.

Their family cabins sold some time ago. Fun to be a part of the family Thanksgiving last night - 10 adults and three dogs.

All were skiers. Eight out of 10 have worked at Baldy, 4 out of ten have taught skiing at Baldy, three generations of one family have taught at Baldy - Leslie Level II, Todd Level II, and Sayre Level I.

We watched the moon rise over Baldy - from Oliver . It came up so fast I didn't have time to get my camera gear set up.

We had a moment of concern when we realized that there were only two dogs outside with us in the dark. The wise 12 year old host dog had decided he had enough excitement, and had gone to bed!

Lots of fun, and happy memories.

Delighted this morning when the kids across the street delivered Thanksgiving dinner for me to enjoy tonight.

Thanksgiving and FireSmart

The work done in the village is amazing, with at least 89 properties having done some FireSmart work. There is a newsletter ready to go that I was hoping would be out ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend. It has been submitted to Strata Council for approval.

I will post excerpts here over the coming days if it doesn't get out in time.

An important message is that Thanksgiving is a good opportunity to talk to your neighbour, and mark and locate corner pins. Should the mechanized tree removal go ahead in the spring, one of the contractor's requirements is that corner pins be marked.

There is a heavy fuel load on deep lots between Porcupine and Cougar. We walked this area with the contractor and two of the property owners, and will be consulting with adjacent owners for a path to remove fuel.

Nails in trees stop the mill, and can cause serious injury. Please take the time to walk your property, and check for trees that might have had a nail in at one time for Christmas lights or bird feeders. You might need the snow to stand on to remove them, but checking and planning ahead will speed things up in the spring.

If you have a lot without buildings, please stake your proposed building site for the contractor.

The fall weather has been amazing,  17C at 10:15am. Our fire danger rating is back up to a "4". Please be very careful with power tools, have water handy, and do not light a fire in the village.

There is room at the burn pile, but when I went down the other day it was back in only.
