Little Green Bag

If you thought my driveway was a good place to put a little green bag, I have moved it across the street so you can pick it up on your way back.

Save the Date - April 9th - Slush Cup

Seven more days to skibaldy this season. March 30 - April 2nd, and the bonus 3 Easter days. April 7,8,9th

Slush Cup is April 9th. You might be able to stay dry - current management prefers a slightly shorter pond.

I've done it, and I have one hint for you - if you hit the pond at an angle, don't try to steer on the water with your ski!

Baldy Babes Wind-up Today

Hello Baldy Babes,

Our final snowshoe this season brought us to the Baldy Babes Pool. Hilary in the lead, Cheryl in the middle of the group and I was the tail guide. The weather cooperated with sunshine, puffy clouds, calm winds and perfect temperature.

We celebrated with some bubbly and sang the Baldy Babes song.

Thank you Chloe and the staff for the great food, beverages and comfort of the Baldy Bar.

Thank You all for the beautiful gift baskets! They are so special.

Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces next year!

Take Care, Marian

Did you find a cell phone on the hill?

Just had a young fellow at my door - tracking of the cell phone directed him to my area of Porcupine, so he was thinking someone may have picked it up with the intention of taking it to guest services.

Special Weekend, Thank-you Uncle Mark K!

If all you do is ski with the same people all of the time, you can miss out on some great experiences. This weekend I had two days of seeing our special mountain through the eyes of a 14 year old. Thank-you Mark for bringing your niece to Baldy - Lex, Gail and I had a wonderful time with Alexis. She is an exceptional teen, and fun to be with.

Alpine Club, and Spring Break Camps

A successful season with 21 young skiers, 9 more enhanced their skills in the first Spring Break camp, and Coach Ted is out on the hill with the second Spring Break camp.

Today was like Spring Break should be - so many little skiers having a lot of fun on the Sugar Lump. Even this old timer had more runs today than any other day this season.

South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver closed Saturday overnight due to short staffing - Penticton News

South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver closed Saturday overnight due to short staffing - Penticton News: Interior Health has announced a temporary service interruption at the South Okanagan General Hospital emergency department in Oliver on Saturday due to an 'unexpected limited physician availability.'

There is a lot of titanium on Baldy

On the hill this week there have been replacement knees, hips, shoulders and at least one ankle. Joint replacements have not prevented most from returning to the slopes.

We have one resident who chooses to use her titanium knees only on snow shoes. One other no longer skis, but comes up, goes for walks, and continues to welcome guests to the cabin.

Happy Birthday Virginia - enjoy your day with family here.

Ponderosa Groomed

Many of us don't have curtains on our upper floor bedroom windows, because we like to look out at the weather when we wake up.

One cabin has their loft bedroom illuminated when the groomer works on Ponderosa.

Report this morning - 5 passes down Pondo.

The Cat Came Back!

The walkabout is over - the cat came back!

Annual Spring Break Rant

A standardized spring break across the province would be so much easier for the kids of Baldy. Some are going back to school next week, others have another week. Baldy is closed Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Alternate Route

I have joined MC in no longer using the road crossing at the power line by Websters. When the season is over, I'll dig out my submissions to council in past years, and put together another one for when they review the snow removal contract. Some of my suggestions would require summer work. I am now skiing across toward Klamuts, down the ramp, and walking up the road.

Northern Lights

For those who are still up and about around midnight, Rob got some great images of the Northern Lights last night, and there is potential for as good or better tonight.

Good to hear from Bryan Gough

Bryan has been a contributor to the blog over the years, with photos of interest of Baldy in the early years, and work on the access to "Linda Lake" or "No Fish Lake". At one time, he manned the Forestry Lookout at the top of the mountain.

Here is a photo he sent of the tree in Ron's photo, and a little info.

Your blog photo of that lonely tree in Sidley by Ron reminded me of a pic I took on April 25, 2003, nearly twenty years ago, of that same solitary behemoth in which the tree is still very recognizable. Ponderosa pine and western larch share a commonality in that after they die their sap (pitch) slowly settles into the roots and lower trunk, acting as a preservative and allowing the trees to remain standing dead for many decades, long after the lodgepole pine, engelmann spruce, and douglas fir have fallen and rotted away completely. Ron's photo of the tree, while now missing the finer branchlets and twigs, appears to show a hawk perched at the very top.

Great Morning on Sugar Lump

Sugar Lump is working just fine now, and lots of happy people out there.

The Eagle runs were a little firm to start, the Sugar Lump runs were good to start, then light snow started to fall improving all surfaces.

Weather guessers are still forecasting significant snow for tonight..

Thanks to Ron Hiller for these images. Ron has a website where you can order various prints and products with his images on them.
When placing an order, check to see where it will be shipped from - the pixel company has 15 locations in Canada and USA, and not all have the same products.

Ron owns Sidley Mountain Auto, but when his inventory of used and parts cars are under the snow, he has more time for photography.

Prescribed Burn Heads Up

I have not seen this on the BCWF Facebook page yet, but it is in the latest edition of the Kettle River Echo.

Update on the Lump

Monday March 27th will be the last Baldy Babes of the season

Hello Baldy Babes,

Celebrating the first day of Spring today on the trails. Next Monday will be our last Baldy Babes snowshoe for 2023. We will meet at 10 at the Lodge for our snowshoe with a special celebration.

Our snowshoe trek today brought us to the Stripper Pole. A little crunchy snow under the shoe in places and soft quiet snow too. Thank you Chloe and the Baldy staff for lunch a la carte.

Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces next week.

Take care, Marian

Three retired health care professionals are out there snow shoeing every day. They have come up with a fitness plan for Wylee, and he was allowed to tag along with the Baldy Babes today.

Birthday Monday

You may have seen this cowboy at the fundraiser last night. 62 years old on Monday.

Reminiscing in the food line...........

A conversation in the food line at the fundraiser last night, with a Grandfather of a current Alpine Club youth, and the mother of some other Alpine Club members.

Talking about the days of Sieglinde skiing with a long line of little ones following her all over the hill. I do have a photo somewhere of the kids giving Sieglinde a pair of pink long johns that were signed by all the kids on the team.

At least two younger siblings of racers in these photos were there last night with their children.

Thanks to a conversation on the chair this winter, I now have the equipment to bulk scan the bins of photos I have from the pre-digital years. Lots more Baldy History to come.

A good old fashioned Baldy family party

A first class event thanks to enthusiastic families. Thanks to Troy, Mindy and the BMR Team. Good food, and beverage service. The kids of the alpine club were great with manning the ticket table, and clearing tables.

Lots of work and attention to detail - table cloths, table decorations, and a large display upstairs of silent auction items.

Thanks to Kirsten and Michael for helping with the 50/50.

A full house, including representatives from People in Motion and Adaptive Snow Sports, parents of earlier club groups, former Baldy racers with their children.

The party will be going on for awhile yet.
