Return-it express now available in Oliver.

I have by-passed the bottle return depot a number of times this summer because of line-ups. I signed up online for return-it express, and it is a real time saver. Clear bag - don't have to sort milk cartons, pop and beer cans, juice containers etc -  walk into the depot, punch in your phone number, print a tag for the bag, and you're done. In a day or two your account is credited. You can request a cheque or interac transfer.

Those Mattresses

Mattresses at the transfer station. It looks like they will take them in Rock Creek, but there will be fees.

At the Oliver Landfill, the fee is $10 per unit - they take them apart, and recycle components.

If some one is willing to haul them away, I would chip in toward the landfill fees.

Rock Creek would likely waive the fees if you tell them where they came from.

Oliver requires pre-approval from RDOS for waiving fees - and these are in the RDKB.

Street Pick-up

Apologies to the 3 owners who were missed on the street pick-up. I wasn't here when the pick up happened. I helped Bob awhile back, and only recently was made aware of the Campbell and Dunkin piles being missed. They have been hauled away now.

It is impressive to drive around the village these days and see so many properties cleaned-up.

The History of the Burn Pile

As part of Borderline Ski Club, I was involved in setting up the first burn pile more than 30 years ago. We had concerns about the number of owners burning debris on their properties. The original site was at the edge of the parking lot - it was easy to police, and people like George Webster cut their firewood from the pile, so there wasn't much left to burn in the fall.

"The Witch" is not longer with us, and she did not publish "The Chronicles of Mt. Hairy", so I don't have a reference to check on the timing of the famous fly by on Ore-House Road. The Witch was still living at the coast, and was here cleaning up her property -  burning debris at the edge of the road - in August. I don't remember if it was a helicopter or fixed wing, but she was "buzzed" by an aircraft checking out the smoke. She got the message.

If anyone wants some free small diameter firewood, there is some at the burn pile today.

Attention All Strata and Wapiti Owners

If your e-mail is registered with Hometime, you will have received a notice of a Town Hall Meeting on September 7th. Please make every effort to participate. As this is not a special general meeting, I don’t think proxies apply.

This is not the year to ignore e-mails from the Strata Management Company. I am disturbed by the attitude of some of the “old guard” who are more than ready to endorse cutting off Baldy Mountain Resort’s sewer connection.

Participate in the meeting, and have your say.

Village of Apex residents can go home after two-plus weeks under evacuation order - Penticton News

Village of Apex residents can go home after two-plus weeks under evacuation order - Penticton News: An evacuation order for Apex Mountain Village will be rescinded at noon Tuesday.

Oh Joy.........

Only at Baldy, does the owner of the water utility issue notice of 15% rate increase for water, while still substantially in arrears to the community owned sewer system.

Early Bird Pass Discount Ends August 15th - Opinion on Moving Forward

I have yet to meet BMR ownership, but have established a good relationship with on site management.

With regard to the publicity earlier this year about BMR's outstanding sewer bill. Of course there are two sides to every story. Do I agree with everything ownership has done? No. Do I agree with everything that the council/sewer board has done? No.

I have done my own research online on sewer rates. The rate being charged BMR seems high to me - I believe there is work and conversation to be had to resolve this issue.

My understanding is that ownership has initiated some contact.

The council/board indicated in a letter to strata members that there could be a vote to disconnect the lodge from the sewer system. Time is marching on, BMR is preparing for the season, we all want to ski.

In my opinion, disconnecting the sewer is not a positive move under any circumstances for the best interests of the community.

Conversation, negotiation and collaboration will move Baldy forward. Confrontation and digging one's heals in will not.

The village and the public want to buy their passes. The powers that be need to state that they are talking, and the season will go ahead.

Tell your Strata Council that you want to ski this winter.

You can send a message through the Power Strata Website to individual directors.

Screws at the Burn Pile

It looks like whoever dumped the wood etc at the burn pile swept out the back of their truck too. I have a 2 inch magnet on a long handle, and this is what I picked up from around the edge of the stuff. At least two people have picked up some of the wood to recycle.

Didn't want to stand in line..........

So I bought my pass the other day - online. I have not seen an update from the Strata Council, but I have done my own research. I don't want to get involved, I just want both sides to sit down and talk, and work things out.

Evacuation Order for Apex Mountain Resort

Our friends at Apex Mountain Resort have been ordered out. We know all too well what that feels like.
Sage , at least we know you are going to a welcoming home with an awesome view, and great food! Hang in there, your friends are here to talk.
Castanet update:

UPDATE 9:10 a.m.

Close to 400 people are expected to be impacted by an evacuation order issued Monday morning at Apex Mountain village.

The City of Penticton says its Emergency Support Services Centre — at Princess Margaret Secondary at 120 Green Avenue — will provide help to the evacuees.

Emergency officials are suggesting evacuees stay with friends or family if possible to keep hotel capacity free for those who have no alternatives.

"No matter which option you choose either come into the ESS or call us. We want to make sure everyone has all the support and information they need and ensure everyone is safe," says Adam Goodwin, Penticton’s ESS co-ordinator.

Emergency Support Services is only provided if your primary residence is one of the properties under evacuation order. ESS can be reached at https://ess.gov.bc.ca/ or by calling 1-800-585-9559.

“Our job is to make sure everyone of our neighbours are safe and that they have what they need to get through this stressful time,” says Goodwin.

“As a community, we’ll all do what we can to help and we’re extremely grateful to community members who are opening up their homes. We don’t anticipate any major problems with accommodation or undue stress on local room capacity.”

Those wishing to support the evacuees financially are encouraged to either make a donation to the Red Cross or drop off gift cards at City Hall during regular hours.

UPDATE 9 a.m.

In addition to an evacuation order for the Apex Mountain village, the RDOS has also expanded the evacuation alert area around the Keremeos Creek wildfire.

New addresses on Resolute Road, Highway 3A, Toy Creek Road, Green Mountain Road and more have been added to the evacuation alert area. Impacted residents should pack and be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

A list of addresses now on alert can be found here.

UPDATE: 8:15 a.m.

An evacuation order has been issued for the Apex Mountain Resort area as the Keremeos Creek wildfire continues to burn nearby.

The evacuation order was issued at 8 a.m. by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre.

Residents must leave the area immediately.

A complete list of affected addresses can be found here.

Members of the RCMP and search and rescue teams will be expediting the action, the RDOS says.

Evacuees can register at the reception centre at Princess Margaret Secondary School in Penticton or online at ess.gov.bc.ca.

Anyone requiring transportation assistance from the evacuation area or identify as having extraordinary needs, is asked to call the RDOS EOC at 250-490-4225
