New Links

Thanks Bryan Gough for sending me two new links - now on the sidebar. Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin, and Kettle River Level. The Kettle River graph shows what I learned today - there was a drop in the Kettle after the Saturday rise.

Oliver Community Garden

Live on Baldy but love those Okanagan vine ripened tomatoes? Your neighbours Sam, Lyn and Mal rent plots at the Oliver Community Garden to grow and enjoy our summer vegetables. I was at the AGM tonight, and learned that there are a few rental plots still available for this season.

Membership in the society is $5.00, and another $25.00 gets you a raised bed for the season - about 4'x10'. Automatic irrigation, garden tools are all there. You plant and tend your own plot, plus give some time to the gardens as a whole to keep things tidy.

After 43 Years, Super-Valu in Oliver is closing Thursday. Thank-you Brogan Family for all you have done for Oliver

The end of an era - The Brogan Family has run the Super-Valu for so long, and this community has benefitted from a full service store, bakery, deli, floral meat - for me it was my one stop grocery store. It was also a major employer in town, with many long time employees. Super-Valu was a supporter of so many things in Oliver.

To Wally and Terri - a big thank-you, and happy retirement. To Al - best wishes in whatever you do, and make sure, whatever it is, it gives you the freedom to come ski with us.

Lots of questions on the future of the staff - some may work for the new store. A great group of people.

The store closing was to be April 30th, but has been moved up to Thursday, as the stock is flying out the doors at great prices.

Ever watch "The Liquidator" ? Direct Liquidation is coming to conduct an auction on all the remaining things - shelves, coolers, shopping carts, fork lift etc. Viewing May 6th, Auction May 7th.

The "Corporate Thing" will start soon, with Loblaws bringing in a manager to oversee the transformation of the store to a Loblaw's "No Frills" grocery store. Opening sometime in August.

I dread the summer chaos trying to shop in Oliver with only one grocery store.

Dave Kampe - Peter's Brothers Paving

We see their trucks everywhere - behind the company is a generous man who has just made another generous donation to the new patient tower for the Penticton Hospital. When the new tower opens, it will have a full time MRI machine, thanks to Dave Kampe.

Currently PRH shares a mobile MRI which is in Penticton 2 weeks out of each month.

Kettle River up Three Feet Saturday - Thanks for the heads up James.

The Queen

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth turned 90 today - I didn't know she was three days older than Marge.
Marge has done so much for so many in her first 90 years - and without staff.

Marge's 90th Tea on Sunday

There are too many Baldy Family members who don't follow the blog this time of the year. Then they ask questions later, or wonder why "nobody told them." So get the word out folks, the Matriarch of the Mountain will be awfully disappointed Sunday if some of her Baldy friends miss her 90th Birthday Party because they didn't read the blog! All of Marge's Baldy friends are welcome.

Tree Falling

A faller is coming up in about 3 weeks - depending on the snow melt. He would like to fill his day, rather than make more than one trip. E-mail me and I'll connect you.

It's never too early to think about cleaning up the forest fuels on your property.

Top Hat Service - New Owner

Mike has retired, and the new owner of Top Hat Service is Al Smith - the fellow most of us met last year when he was working with Mike.

The business line is the same:  250-493-5190
Al Smith's e-mail is  tophat2016@gmail.com

I've told him that there is still too much snow up here.

Contact Al if you want to get on the list for chimney cleaning this season.

Have you read your Strata Minutes?

My earlier post comes to mind.

Common sense is not a gift, it is a punishment.

Because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

Cruel April Fools

When I went to school, we were told all the pranks were to be over at noon. This sign was seen yesterday afternoon at the entrance to the village. Not many people around yesterday, and I doubt that it was the handiwork of the Cowboys on the old Bandwagon.

When and if something happens, I am sure we will be notified in a professional manner.
