Best Wishes Warren

Ski patrol, paramedic, contractor, fireman, nice guy, Baldy family. I didn't know you two had set a date, but I saw a rather obvious directional sign to your stag on my way home. :)

Ghost Blogger

Thanks Sherry for helping me keep the blog fresh while I was at Mayne Island. Stunning sunset Sunday night - cab full of passengers so the good camera was buried in the back - took about 25 shots with the point and shoot, but you really had to be on deck to soak it all in.

A couple more weeks friends................

I had a good meeting today with Joey O'Brien, the Managing Director for the numbered company intending to complete the purchase of the Baldy Assets. Court approval Monday was the culmination of a ton of work, and the deal is set to close in a matter of days.

The website launch and plan details will be in the next couple of weeks. The new website may look a little familiar, as I have authorized Joey to use my photos to build the website.

The buyers understand the urgency of getting to work on the mountain with summer grooming and lift maintenance. They can announce their staff and things, but you would be happy to know that they realise the value of Matt Koenig to this mountain, and are in discussions with him regarding mountain maintenance and operations. Matt is still working out of town, but will be back soon - we offered many times to help him remove the Baldy decals from his truck, but they are still there, and we know he wants to be part of a successful Baldy. (With pay, and respect of course)

Yes Sherry, I did ask about season pass prices, and I think you will be happy.

There will be more operating days than we are used to.

The pricing and operating schedule are bold, not what I would do, but if they deliver, you'll all be happy.

The temptation would be to jump for joy, but after the last fiasco, we are all a little reluctant to get excited. When the deal closes, people are hired, money in the bank, cheques are good - things are moving forward, that will help. I get it WesB, you will believe it when your backside is sitting on the Eagle. I will be posting action photos when things start to happen up here.

It is a little unusual for someone new to be under intense scrutiny because of the actions of another unrelated party.

  • T-bar Tony - I would start saving for airfare if I were you mate
  • Roger and Lisa - relief for you I'm sure
  • Margaret, I know you will bring your dancing shoes, looks like LJB will have a venue to play other than your living room
  • Ron the Dentist - I wouldn't book Mexico for Christmas
  • Mark I think you timed your retirement just right
  • When the deal closes, I'm betting Marge will be the happiest of all.
  • Lincoln, Teagan, Cienna, Morgan, Cohen, Oliver, the McKenzie girls- looking forward to seeing you rip it up at Baldy
So standby folks, it shouldn't be much longer for the kind of release you are waiting for. The timing may be a little tricky for me, as things will be happening while I am busy with family visiting from Norway. If the blog looks stale for a couple of days, check www.skibaldy.com to see if their site is up.

The long and winding road................

It has been a long haul, with more steps and complications than you could possibly imagine. As a community we have had enough of commitments that were not fulfilled. It is unfortunate that the receiver chose to issue a press release today. Today's court ruling was a long awaited major step in a very long process to the desired result. I can understand that the receiver would be anxious to share the news.

The results tonight are a little bit of jubilation, some jitters, some skepticism. The community didn't want news until it was complete, and they want to see boots on the ground.

Hang tight my friends, it really does look like things are moving ahead, and like I promised you before, I will let you know when the deal is done.

Driving home from the coast today I developed some great ideas for photos and things for the blog when it was time to make an announcement. The cat is out of the bag now, so I guess you'll keep getting more photos of horses, cows and wildflowers for awhile.

G-Force Issues Release

G-Force issued a press release today. I have an appointment with the purchaser tomorrow, to discuss what happens next, and how we will work together on release of information, and I committed not to "jump the gun" in releasing information before the purchaser.

Fresh Reading Material on the Receiver's Website

Court documents have been added to the Receiver's website regarding attempts to recover ski area assets from Fred Johnston and his companies. Interesting to note that Fred Johnston appeared alone, without counsel at the recent appearance. Last time I checked, not all assets had been recovered - I haven't asked for a couple of weeks.

Dust Contol Application in the Village

Dust control being applied in the village today. It is generally done every second year, because of the cost factor. Apparently the mixture is a little different this year. Looking forward to eating less dust this summer. It helps too if people drive slowly in the village.

Widely shared on Facebook, but I don't know the origin....

It's Private Property

There is a summer access behind my home that is shared by the neighbours - we built it on our own properties so we can get firewood in to the back in the summer. It is not a public road, it is limited access for owners only.
Don't need any dirt bikes zipping through there. If there continues to be abuse, I will block off my property line and basically disable the north end of the access.

Sunday Thoughts

Fairly quiet week....
  • Three overnight snowfalls
  • one burned out truck wrapped in police tape near 17km
  • one rather large whole dug at the gas line near 18km

From Castanet

Glad to see that abuse of the Alpine is being enforced.

5 fined on Little White
Five people have been fined for causing environmental damage to alpine vegetation on Little White Mountain southeast of Kelowna last Sunday.

Conservation officer Terry Myroniuk said the five were on off road vehicles operating off existing roads on the backside of the mountain above the 1,700 meter mark.

“Their actions caused environmental damage,” said Myroniuk. “All five drivers received violation tickets.”

“It is an offence to operate any motorized vehicles off of existing roads and trails above 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) in elevation,” Myroniuk said. “It is also an offence to operate a motor vehicle in a manner causing damage to the environment (at any elevation). This includes mudbogging.”
Fines for those types of offence range from $230 to $805.

Myroniuk said elevation restrictions are in place to protect alpine and sub-alpine vegetation, which is sensitive to disturbances. Reckless operation off of existing roads can cause irreparable damage to this sensitive habitat.

“Mudbogging is illegal, but so is any kind of off-road activity causing environmental damage...It is illegal and destructive.”
The Conservation Service is asking anyone who can identify a truck spotted on Little White Mountain on Sunday or provide any information to assist the investigation to call 1-877-952-7277.  Callers can remain anonymous.

Thursday

  • Microsoft installed Windows 10 on my laptop today while the lid was closed and I was in town, not a happy camper
  • Conair Air Tankers arrive at Penticton Airport for the season
  • Big White announcing drop in season pass rates
  • gas prices going up and Kelowna gas stations running out of gas

Checking things out at Baldy................

I had fun with Sofie and Logan when they came up Tuesday to check on Grammy and Grandpa's House. Collecting rocks and old snow are OK, but winter and skiing are better!
