Will give the new folks some slack - this is not the 50th season of operation for Baldy - it is the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the hill.

Opening delayed - come on Ullr! Update from BMR Facebook

It is a white and beautiful day up here at Baldy today. Unfortunately the great snowmakers in the sky haven't fully blessed us with a deep enough snowpack to open up the mountain safely. Things may change so keep your eye on the weather, but we are tentatively moving our opening day back to Friday December 14th. If we get a huge dump between now and then we'll open when we can. In the meantime, keep your snow dances going and we'll see you on the slopes on the 14th weather permitting.

Date Set for Anniversary Weekend January 26th

Baldy Mountain Resort Celebrates 50th Year of Making Memories with 3 BIG NEW events.

Oliver, BC (Thursday, November 29,2018) - Baldy Mountain Resort is gearing up to celebrate 50 years of fun with 3 big exciting and innovative new events built on our one-of-a-kind culture.

Baldy will be celebrating the people, powder and parties that built the mountain into what we all know and love today with a 50 Year reunion party in January. February will see the launch of a new event for all of the oenophiles, aficionados and connoisseurs of the great grape with Baldy’s 1st annual Winter Wine Event, showcasing the South Okanagan’s best vintners. Come spring it’s time for the hopheads to have their heyday at Baldy’s 1st annual Craft Beer Event. Throughout our 50th anniversary season we’ll be celebrating everything that makes Baldy BC’s best hidden gem. Family friendly mountain, breathtaking views, incredible views, down-to-earth culture with a relaxed vibe and the most affordable prices in BC.

“There are few places like Baldy Mountain Resort left where the focus is still solely on what’s important: Having fun with family and friends in a spectacular mountain environment,” explained General Manager Andy Foster. “We want to thank all of the Baldy family for their contributions to building what we think is BC’s best hidden gem ski resort, and continue their spirit of celebrating winter mountain culture.”

“We’re truly blessed in the Okanagan to be surrounded by some of the finest wineries and craft breweries in the province and country. This year we’re literally tapping into that incredible culture that surrounds Baldy Mountain Resort and celebrating it with two new events. We’re certain the 1st annual Winter Wine Event, and 1st annual Craft Beer Event will quickly become key parts of Baldy’s half century of skiing lore."

50th Year Reunion - Saturday, January 26th,2019 more info
From day one of the 1968-69 season when the McKinney T-bar began hauling skiers up our slopes, there has been one constant connecting the past to today, and that’s the unique character and vibe of the Baldy community. Over the past half century there has been a dedicated and passionate crew of locals that have carved a memory making factory out of the side of Baldy Mountain. All season long, we’ll have a series of content celebrating the “People of Baldy,” highlighting the stories behind our favourite lifts and trails. It all culminates with a 50th Year Reunion in the Baldy’s classic lodge in late January.

Winter Wine Event - Saturday, February 9th, 2019 more info
In addition to being blessed with a snowy, high elevation mountain Baldy is unique among ski areas in that we are located in the Wine Capital of Canada, celebrated by some of the best wineries in the country and indeed the world. To celebrate our delicious location, Baldy is pitting the South Okanagan’s best vintners head to head in our 1st Annual Winter Wine competition. Featuring local wineries, guests will be able to ski all day, and close it out by tasting and selecting their favourite wines in what will be an epic evening of everything wine.

Craft Beer Event - Saturday, March 23rd more info
The next best thing to a great day on the slopes, is a great afternoon in the spring sunshine with a locally crafted beer in hand. This March Baldy is combining both for a sun-soaked, snow-filled event not to be missed. The 1st annual Baldy Craft Beer Event takes place on Saturday, March 23rd,2019.

Over the past half century, the sport and business of skiing has seen many changes. Throughout it all Baldy has remained a hidden gem, holding true to the core values that we all love about skiing:  Having fun with friends and family in a spectacular outdoor setting with great snow, smiles and memories to last a lifetime. As the world has become a busier and busier place, you could call us a fortress of fun! Keepers of the real if you will.

Find out more about all of the great events planned for the 2018/2019 season at Baldy on our events page: .

Logo Apparel and T-Shirts

I stopped by the ticket office today - they have some of their new apparel displayed, and some t-shirts are on at a sale price.

Foreground shirts have the large logo - background shirts have a "snowy" photo behind the logo.

I like the brand of  helmet........😉 My helmet is the same brand.

New chain rules in B.C.

New chain rules in B.C.: Commercial truck drivers in B.C. will need to ensure they are up to speed on the latest chain-up regulations, which were announced Wednesday by the provincial government. The move was made in an effort to prevent the vast number of incidents that have closed mountain highways in the past. “Last winter, 33 of 35 extended …

A week later maybe?

I wasn't able to connect with the GM today, but my hunch is that opening may be pushed back a bit. The forecast snow for the last couple of days has not materialized. My weather station has had snowflakes on it all day, but we've just had fog.

Mountain Life, and the Great Escape

After 50 winters at Baldy, with almost half of those as a full time resident, I like to get away from time to time. I just got home from my latest escape - Natalie MacMaster, Donnell Leahy, and five of their seven children put on an amazing show last night - a toe tapping, foot stomping energizing good time. A front row centre seat took the experience to a whole new level for me.

Thanks to Jim and Marian for supplying info for the blog.

Nancy Greene Zone Finals at Baldy

Mt. Baldy Alpine Club is hosting the Nancy Greene Finals in March - a two day event with 200 racers from  Revelstoke, Sun Peaks, Harper, Silver Star, Big White and Apex . I'm sure Paul will be recruiting the regulars and a bunch more new volunteers for this event.

Alpine Club Looking for a Coach

Owen will be back this season, but Yanni is expecting a call for knee surgery in the New Year. Contact Paul if you are keen, Certified as a coach or instructor, and interested in helping out with the program on Sundays this winter. This is a paid position, amount will depend on qualifications and experience.

Interest is high - the club should have more participants than last season.

Mountain Life

Some things are more challenging when you live on the mountain, and service calls are not cheap. It took me three weeks to fix my own washing machine, with parts mailed during the postal disruption.

The last 48 plus hours have been very frustrating with a sewer blockage. I was hoping the chemical treatment would work, but it didn't last long.

Sincere thanks to Matt and Swan for coming by after work and running the 100ft snake down the sewer line. The bro gets credit for adding a cleanout in a strategic spot a few years ago.

I was able to get my truck up to the back to unload the snake - better today than tomorrow - the way it is snowing out there, the job would be much harder after tonight's snow. 😉

Thanks Jason - don't look at the pics if rodents gross you out.............

Jason caught a rat in "Le Chateau". Some cabin users needed to do a major clean up.
Update from Graeme - he will be organizing a work party the second week of December - I'm sure it will be appreciated if anyone goes before that with garbage bags, gloves and a mask.

Black box trap is set in the cabin - in case there is another rat - Jason asks that you leave it set.

That legendary hot rum recipe..............

I'm often asked for the "Sam's Hot Rum" recipe - Brenda used to serve it in the bar. Dad was Charter President of the Oroville-Osoyoos Rotary Club - an Oroville couple from the club showed up at the family cabin one day with rum, mix, and the recipe. I just found that original recipe card. It is smooth with the ice cream in it. Preheat the mugs - the mix can cool things down quickly. We added the rum at the end.

In the beginning...........

There was only one access road to Baldy - Terry Smith Built the last 4 miles from Camp McKinney. I remember my first ride on that road in the back of the old Land Rover.

Terry Smith and Jack Hulton - October 1968 - before installation of Borderline's T-bar on McKinney

Irene Fairweather and Alfred Gruhl on the McKinney Tee - no clearing yet on Baldy.

Crit Lake

Crit Lake is named for John Crittendon (sp?) - he was part of the original Baldy investment group. Sadly, he was killed in a car accident on a ski trip to the Rockies. That big flat area on Jolly Jack is the lake (or swamp). If I remember correctly, John's sled broke through the ice there on an exploration outing, and he got a little wet.

There is a bronze plaque around somewhere - never got mounted by the lake, and was beside the fireplace in the bar for a time.

Disturbing news through one of my forest industry contacts...........

From logging crew up on baldy...
Someone broke into our pick ups today. White chev dually. Also a black titan running around stealing shit and a 90’s black ford steeling fuel around the area, it’s a long box extended cab with running boards.

"There’s been more thieves around baldy, my brother in-law has also had his truck broken into and stuff stolen, thought it would be good to share around to the other locals"

"Yeah my work truck was broken into about a month ago on the McKinney 32km. "

Project Update

Log hauling will likely be finished by mid-next week. They lost a couple of hauling days due to mud - not an issue now. When the hauling is finished, the roads will be put to bed, then the raking will start in the spring when the snow is gone.
