Funding for the Rock Creek Fairgrounds facilities and staffing took a big hit during covid. Not only is the facility the venue for the Fall Fair, but a gathering place for the community, and outstanding rental facility. An amazing example of what a small community can do when they work together.
I first attended the Fair as a child, when it was a one day event. Like me, several of my readers rode the school bus to the Fair as part of the school band in Osoyoos. We played the National Anthem at the opening ceremonies
Some years the weather could be damp, and one of the upgrades I appreciated the most was the conversion of the main mingling area from mud to grass.
I remember some great food - baron of beef, and the Smith Family chicken booth. (Smith's Slide). Terry Smith was the builder in the original Baldy ownership group. Road building, run clearing, lodge building, lift assembly.......... Terry was a big man with a heart of gold. For me, a highlight of the Fair was a hug from Terry - a warm tight hug, that usually led to a visit to the optometrist after to straighten my glasses frames - they bent against his chest.
The price of admission on Sunday is lower than Saturday to try to get the crowd spread out. It seems that Saturday is still the day to go to connect with a lot of people you haven't seen in a long time
If you have never been to the Fair, it is worthwhile. Pets have to be left at home. No dogs on the property at any time.
