Less surface water on the roads - drying out in most areas of the village roads. Creek is flowing strong, but well within it's channel.

National Day of Mourning
A day to pause and reflect on those who lost their lives on the job. Thinking of Gio today.
Avalanche Danger
Check out the massive avalanche triggered by patrol at Crystal Mountain.
Avalanche Canada has issued a Province wide warning of unstable snow pack. You can see in the video that what they triggered was way bigger than what they thought would happen.
Plus 13C in the shade
My thermometer may be a little low, as it is shaded, and there is still snow on my back deck. I saw a high of 13C today, and now it is down to 10C. The melt has accelerated today.
The creek started running under the lodge this afternoon - not too much volume yet. I tried to climb the bank below the triplex to look for outflow below, but I sunk up to my thighs in the snow.

Spring lower down..........
Warm Day
Friday at noon - my thermometer says plus 9C, but it is well shaded. It feels a lot warmer than that. I did a walk around the lodge this morning - no signs of the creek running yet. WC thinks with today's heat, it may start running tomorrow.
Most of the Eagle Chairs are off for off season maintenance.

Run-off
There is only so much a group of 60 plus year olds can do with hand tools. Thanks to Iain, Mark, Sherry, Sam, Rod and much younger Katlin for channeling surface water and making holes in the icy banks to give the water somewhere to go.
There is already some surface erosion where the Baldy road leaves the ski area - that is an annual issue that needs a machine.

Signs of Spring?
Are you around?
The forecast for the coming days has been updated to eliminate the cooling off period, and add significant water falling from the sky starting Sunday night. (sorry, this blog does not use the 4 letter word starting with r and ending with n.)
Rod is compiling a list of names and phone numbers, incase we end up needing a crew at some point for water diversion. If you are available, please let Rod know, or e-mail me your phone number at unbaldy@gmail.com

Free Firesmart Assessments
If you missed out on an assessment last year, and wish to book a free Firesmart Assessment, RDKB is providing the service.
Searching for photos...........
When I am looking for photos, I usually come across a file that is memorable, and emotional. A happy celebration April 24, 2016 for Marge's 90th birthday. So many of those attending are no longer with us.
George, Betty and Jay - all have passed. |
Marge and Joan, respected elders in the community. Both have passed. |
The Matriarch of Baldy - missed so much. |
"Mother Marge" always game for adventure with her younger friends. |
Proud Mom |
Barbara Fenwick-Wilson passed during Covid, and we didn't get a chance for a Baldy goodbye. |
Congratulations Lee Mounsey, Level IV
If you have tried to work your way up the CSIA ladder, you know that obtaining Level IV certification is not an easy task. Lee had her Level III when she came to Baldy, and was the most energetic and enthusiastic ski and snowboard instructor. As Snow School director she also helped out in special events, and had an amazing treasure trunk of costumes and retro gear to share.
When the 3B's were done at Baldy, Lee went back to her previous snow school at Whistler Blackcomb. I had hoped that she would be back soon, but she had a goal, and she was determined to get that Level IV.
The bigger resorts have in house Level IV's and lots of professional development opportunities. If she was going to advance, it would be at a large resort.
Congratulations Lee!

The Power of Mother Nature
1972 - Paul Fairweather photos from May. On June 2nd 1972 Osoyoos Lake flooded our family home.
Not sure what year:
I'll look for the photos - I think they were prints. On a warm sunny afternoon, there was a sudden downpour, and the surface melt accelerated overflowing the ditch on the upper curve of Bobcat, eroding the road, and threatening everything in it's path.
Every person on the mountain grabbed hand tools and worked hard to get the water directed back into the ditch - I got home after the work was done.
2012
April 26th 2012, there was a culvert blockage, and the creek backed up and flooded the area on the village side of the lodge, and started down the road. It was a mad scramble to dig down through the snow and get the water flowing. That night, major sections of McKinney road also washed out. I have a video of that somewhere too.
2023
We have a lot of snow, and a strong warming trend in the forecast. I have given the heads up to BMR, and notified one of the people involved in 2012.

April 18th
The neighbours don't need blinds for privacy on the kitchen window anymore. |
There was a narrow gap to the bottom of one container door - If I want anything else out of there it will be more digging. |
Friends are asking me when the snow will be gone........... |
First thing scrapped from today's list - Firesmart limbing of the branches. |
Barbeque? Some day. The back deck is 3 ft off the ground. |

Saturday Early Evening
We had the revving noisy sled thing last night in the early evening, but it didn't last long. Maybe they were deterred by resident BMR staff.
