There have been fatalities this winter in avalanches. The most recent, near Kaslo. Always check avalanche.ca and have the right gear for the backcountry.
In this case, the skiers were waiting, the incoming heli saw the slide starting, sounded the siren, and they couldn't all get out of the way.
