Stick to the groomers, and there is some good skiing out there. Yes the base is firm, but the groomer operators freshen the surface every night, and the sun helps during the day.
Wear your layers, you can always unzip your jacket. It can be breezy up top.
The attempt on the village roads was to provide sand on one side to improve safety. Realistically, a truck sander is not precise, and you will have to take your skis off at some point to get home.
