Driven by Community: Enhancing Baldy’s Trails for All Seasons

The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC has awarded a grant of $3,238 to the Baldy Mountain Community Association (BMCA) to enhance trail markings, signage, and mapping along the well-loved hiking and snowshoe trails on the east side of Baldy Village. Supported by dedicated volunteer labour, BMCA members will be actively involved in trimming branches, installing markers, and improving wayfinding throughout the network. Baldy Mountain Resort (BMR) has also agreed to be involved with this project and the Osoyoos Indian Band has been very surpportive.

For nearly 60 years, the Baldy trail system has grown organically alongside the evolution of the area—from a small ski hill into a vibrant, year-round community. Today, these trails are a valued part of daily life for residents and a memorable experience for visitors in every season.

In Sweet Single Track, author Andrew Drouin describes Baldy’s network as “impressive for such a small resort,” while noting the need for clearer, more consistent signage. A previous project successfully addressed these issues on the west side of the Village, creating a safer and more user-friendly experience. This new initiative brings that same level of care and attention to the east side.

The project will focus on three key trails: Gruhl’s Pool Loop, a scenic 2–3 hour route with sweeping views; Eleven to Heaven, a thoughtfully designed trail offering safe winter access and cool summer travel; and Twisted Tree Trail, a rewarding climb to one of Baldy’s most stunning viewpoints. While these trails are already well-used year-round, improved signage and mapping are essential—especially in areas with limited cell service.

With continued support from Andrew Drouin, who is generously contributing GPS verification and technical expertise, the project will deliver consistent trail markers, updated maps at key junctions, and enhanced digital resources through the Baldy Blog and Sweet Single Track.

This initiative reflects BMCA’s deep commitment to fostering community connection, enhancing safety, and encouraging outdoor recreation. The Association extends its sincere thanks to the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC for supporting a project that will enrich the Baldy experience for years to come.

Volunteers are always welcome to be part of this meaningful work and enjoy time on the trails. Those interested please contact Rod at snowmac@shaw.ca
