CWSAA - Canada West Ski Areas Association

The ski industry annual gathering is in Penticton this year, making it doable for more of the Baldy team to attend. The first Facebook photo dump includes, Tim Foster, Russel K, and Nancy Greene-Raine.

I have lots of good memories of those meetings, the networking, and the people - decades ago.

Hmmm, Fortis - read it - about proactive power outages...............

Baldy Mountain Community Association

Are you a member? The association was formed originally as an entity that is eligible to apply for grants. A number of applications have been made, with several grants approved.

The Osoyoos Credit Union recently awarded the BMCA funds to hire a facilitator to come up with a strategic plan for the group, that meets the needs of the community. Any and all suggestions are welcomed by the association.

BMR donated their empties to the association this winter, and volunteers have sorted, bagged and hauled them to the depot. You can contribute your empties to the association by taking them to your nearest Return-It Express depot, and using the phone number in the side bar.

Property owners will have received info on joining, and you can also find earlier blog posts via the search box on the side bar.

Dust Control McKinney Road

Dust control has been applied on McKinney Road, almost to Gregoire Creek. It was a little wet going down earlier, but dry coming home.

Friday, April 25, 2025

The locals are wondering.............

McKinney Road is dusty, and there has been a fair bit of grading going on. We are wondering if dust control application is coming soon. If you are on the road and see that the stuff is being applied, please share the info.

FireSmart - Event and Burn Pile

  • Details to come on the FireSmart Community Event in planning stages for the weekend of June 27-29th
  • The snow is melting down at the old burn pile, but please don't haul anything down there. I am expecting info on a new location, and some chipping in the works . Stay tuned for newsletters from the Baldy FireSmart team.

Gen 7 Fuel at the bottom of the hill...........

I fueled up at Gen 7 today, 130.9. I have their loyalty card, and they had double the points today. If you wish, you can get a card before you purchase, use it, then register after at home.

Neil Murray, Celebration of Life

If you missed the tribute to Neil Murray, you can put his name in the search box on the side bar to find it.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Oliver on May 10th. If you wish to attend, and don't already have the details, contact Chris or Sheilagh. You may also e-mail me for the info.

Season Pass Freeze - Pass Protection

With my propensity to have non skiing related injuries and illness, I have been buying season pass protection for the 10 or so years. I tried to buy my pass yesterday, but the protection feature was not available.

I have reported to BMR, and there will be someone on the mountain Wednesday to look at that.

I have never collected on the protection. I had 25 days in before I broke my ankle in my driveway in February 2024.

Spring?

Post Season Products

I will be picking up a package this week from MEC.

Nikwax - Tech Wash, and Nikwax TX Direct Wash In . I use these products to launder my ski jacket and pants, and have found it effective waterproofing. They come in more than one size container.

Ken G. gave it the real test a few years ago. He followed instructions, then wore his ski suit in the shower. The waterproofing was not perfect, so he repeated the cycle to achieve what he was looking for.

Kuu Bio-Citron Base Cleaner. A spray bottle cleaner/wax remover I use prior to applying storage wax. I normally use it before every waxing, but have used it sparingly this season, as the bottle I have had for several years was almost empty.

A good time of year for these tasks, when it is snowing, and still practical to have the wood stove going for a hang to dry for the clothing.

No, I am not being paid to advertise. This is just information that I have shared with friends before.

Easter Monday

April 20, 2025 - Only on Baldy.............

A hug from the lift operator before my first ride, and before my last ride of the day. A short video clip of my last ride up, with the messages left in the snow by the fellow tuning up the park this morning.

Snowing on my last run, a flurry at 1:00pm, and occasional appearances by the sun.

I miss my former co-worker and family, friends for decades. They did however sell to a nice young family who have made Baldy their home. Looking forward to watching these two boys, and their siblings grow, and having more permanent residents on the hill.

Easter Sunday, Last Day of the Season

Terry, one of Baldy's founders, was approached by the minister of his church about his poor attendance. Terry told him that he was closer to God when he was on the mountain, than when he was in church.

Whatever your choice today, enjoy your day.

I will be going out for a few runs this morning. I'm pretty much "done", like many of my friends, but will do a few more turns.

Thank-you to the BMR team for a great season, and for adding bonus weekends to let us down gently at the end. My 61st ski season will come to an end with my 63rd day on the hill. Mark has more than doubled my ski days this season.

Terry Smith at the back, left to right, Paula Fairweather, Me, Pat Smith with Theresa Smith in front. Alf Gruhl and Willi Tenning. Saint Bernard "Baldy" in front. Paula and I are the only two still living from this photo.

That day was the earliest I ever got up to go skiing, 4:00am I think, to leave Osoyoos and ski the North Bowl before it got too warm.

Saturday

Last weekend and Friday were the best spring conditions. This morning was good, but as it warmed up, things got softer than the earlier days. Apparently there was a brief but intense moisture event during the night which may have contributed to that softening.

No tracks on the "Big Easy" at noon, so I made a few turns.

Forecast cooler tomorrow, so I expect some good turns for the last day.

Sunday at 10:00 Easter Egg Hunt

 Baldy Mountain Resort

Second annual Easter egg hunt. Come join us for our final day of the season tomorrow and find lift tickets for next season, chocolate, Baldy merch and more....
Meet at the roundhouse at 10am to start the hunt. There's eggs on every run on Sugarlump except for Hultons hollow, FWP, and smith slide/borderline. There's also eggs hidden around the base area for the youngsters who can't ski up the lift.
For the kiddos that are capable of skiing on the chairlift. Please leave the base area eggs for the kids who can't.
When you've found some eggs, head to the Cafeteria to trade them in!

The Words of OIB Elder Jane Stelkia, on her 95th Birthday

Advance Polls - Rock Creek

I was there around 5:00, no line-ups. They had been very busy up until that point. They are definitely by the book. In the voting room, one person I have known for 10 ish years, and the other three for more than 50 years. My next door neighbour called me by my real name, and checked my ID.

A Good Friday

Another awesome day of spring skiing in the sunshine. I think the word got out that last weekend was so good. More people around today - some faces familiar from last weekend, some new.

I didn't ski Fairweather this morning, but skied every other run, with some multiple times. Third track down Nk'Mip after 11:00am.

The spring park was tuned up this morning, and was well used. The alpine club "mogul markers" have started to appear again on Tenning's - hoping the person who placed them there will collect them this weekend.

Dummy Downhill  Saturday , lower shaft. Make sure you check the rules and regs - no last minute entries.

" dummies must be in base area by 10am we will look to immediately transport to the top of the course. Dummies should be ready to be sent down between 1230 and 1pm."

Easter Egg hunt for the kids on Sunday.

Tomorrow may bring a few more clouds, and with Sunday being the last day of the season, of course there is snow in the forecast for Sunday night.

A new blog name for the Team Leader - MMH- Man of Many Hats

I've seen him do almost everything around here, but haven't caught him with a mop and a bucket. I talked to MMH this week about the webcam and website.

How many things can you add to a website before you have problems? I think they have found out, and in the off season, the website issues will be addressed . In the meantime, the webcams are not connected, and other features may be disabled to keep the site up. We need the online sales operational so we can take advantage of the couple of weeks of price freeze season passes.

I will continue to post fresh photos so you can see the spring melt from afar, and my weather updates may not be daily after the weekend, but will be updated fairly often.

SOGH ER Overnight Closure

https://www.castanet.net/news/Oliver-Osoyoos/545007/South-Okanagan-General-Hospital-ER-to-close-overnight

Grader

Aim had a grader and a water truck on the road when I went to town today. YRB has filled some potholes since I last went to town.

Annual Maintenance has begun on the Eagle

Trevor, Parker and Brandan in the shop today. The "sheave assemblies", those frames with the wheels at each tower, are taken down and serviced in rotation. This season, they are doing some of this work early, while they can still get close to the towers with the cat.

Did you feel or hear something?

I heard a rumble. Earthquake north of Tonasket this morning.

Oliver Eats

The owners of the business ski Baldy. They are working hard to source food from local and  new sources.

Here is today's sign board.

Safe Travels Kendal

It's a long way to go, but you can sleep on the plane, and dream about all the incredible ski days you had this winter.

It was great to have you here for longer this season, looking forward to your return next season.

Monday

Another perfect day of spring skiing. Corn snow right up to the last run.

* correction - the screaming sound of sleds echoed across the Sugar Lump, making the day slightly less than perfect.

A quick trip to town this morning. The Saskatoon bushes are pushing flowers, and the first of the Balsam Root are starting to appear. I didn't stop to take photos, as I wanted to get back up to join Lex and Gail on the hill. They set a personal best of 21 runs today, and I joined them for the last nine.

The spring park on FWP has been a great hit, and it has been fun to watch the young folks from the chair. Morgan is an amazing skier, and we don't often get to watch him in the winter when he is in the trees. Morgan and friends provided great entertainment under the chair.

Luba's strength and confidence in skiing has really grown this season. She has been skiing forward and backward, shooting video of the young guys doing their thing on the hill.

Lift operators continue to be their cheerful selves, and have been shoveling to keep the ramps in shape during the warm afternoons.

One more bonus weekend to go, Good Friday thru Easter Sunday. Pre-register for the dummy downhill, and there is an Easter egg hunt for the kids on Sunday.

Thanks team BMR.
