Hiking Gruhl’s Pool Loop in the Fall on Mount Baldy- A Movie Maker in our Community
And the Eagle turns........
Always good to see the Eagle turning, even if it is only for maintenance. It is so quiet with the electric upgrades that were done a couple of years ago. I used to be able to hear it from inside my home/.

Over the edge........
Tourists told us there were two tow trucks and emergency response vehicles down the road a bit - these tracks at the top of the canyon, McKinney Road, Baldy side.
Not sure if this is connected in anyway to the siren, and ambulance siting in the village around the same time. Nothing like a siren to get everyone to drop what they are doing and look around.

Maritime Friends , Our thoughts are with you.......
We are enjoying the sun and a warm fall at Baldy. People that we know, and relatives of our community members are in the aftermath of a "storm for the ages". A horrible storm, and at least one report of a missing homeowner whose house was washed into the sea.
Yarmouth County escaped the worst, but lost power.
Happy to connect with our friend from Burgeo,Nfld. Safely home in Vernon before the storm, and her parents home was spared damage. 💖

Cougar - Big Healthy Specimen
Cougar leisurely crossed McKinney Road in front of one of our neighbours headed to town yesterday. Below the cross country trails, just before the FSR to OK Falls. They were able to stop, back up and watch it just off to the side of the road. A healthy looking large cat.

Motor Vehicle Restrictions
I'm not going to spend a lot of my time researching this, but here are a couple of links regarding motor vehicle restrictions in the area of last year's fire. I believe some of the restrictions are still in place.

Day 1 of the Rock Creek Fall Fair - Diamond Jubilee
Funding for the Rock Creek Fairgrounds facilities and staffing took a big hit during covid. Not only is the facility the venue for the Fall Fair, but a gathering place for the community, and outstanding rental facility. An amazing example of what a small community can do when they work together.
I first attended the Fair as a child, when it was a one day event. Like me, several of my readers rode the school bus to the Fair as part of the school band in Osoyoos. We played the National Anthem at the opening ceremonies
Some years the weather could be damp, and one of the upgrades I appreciated the most was the conversion of the main mingling area from mud to grass.
I remember some great food - baron of beef, and the Smith Family chicken booth. (Smith's Slide). Terry Smith was the builder in the original Baldy ownership group. Road building, run clearing, lodge building, lift assembly.......... Terry was a big man with a heart of gold. For me, a highlight of the Fair was a hug from Terry - a warm tight hug, that usually led to a visit to the optometrist after to straighten my glasses frames - they bent against his chest.
The price of admission on Sunday is lower than Saturday to try to get the crowd spread out. It seems that Saturday is still the day to go to connect with a lot of people you haven't seen in a long time
If you have never been to the Fair, it is worthwhile. Pets have to be left at home. No dogs on the property at any time.

Brick Chimney Need Attention - Cap?
Katlin has contacted a 3rd generation mason out of Kelowna. He has some cap work to do on two brick chimneys in the village. If your brick chimney needs some attention, this may be a good opportunity to share travel costs. For details, contact Katlin.

Continuity?
Residents, please consider voting in the RDKB elections. Vicki Gee is the incumbent, and has been very helpful to our community. She is currently working with the FireSmart Board regarding funding possibilities.
Not sure which is the correct spelling for Sheren Gibbs, some of you will remember her working in the ticket office a few years ago.
Vicki and Sheren both live fairly close to us.
I don't know Oliver Glaser.

Featured on this brochure is Roy Burt from Osoyoos. He passed away recently at age 99.
https://nunes-pottinger.com/obituary/roy-burt/
Roy was a friend and skiing companion of Ford Clark who worked for the Oliver Chronicle. Many of the black and white photos we stumble across were taken by Ford. He supplied images to Baldy, and many were printed in the Chronicle.
Two of Ford's daughters were up for a visit last winter, and a group of Ford's family have booked to stay in the Honky Tonk over the holidays.
Firesmart, Firewood
The Firesmart Board met this morning with guest Doug MacLeod. With the water falling from the sky this morning, and the coming days, we have the go ahead from our FS Assessor to start moving firewood back under our decks. Today our fire danger rating is back down to a "2".
Newsletter to come in a couple of weeks.
For tree removal, some owners have been paying $400 per tree, another owner paid $100 per hour. We had an update this morning from the contractor who has been working with us on a plan to mechanically harvest trees and have the timber value cover some of the cost. Timber prices are dropping , and mills are only guaranteeing prices for short terms. Planning will continue, but this will likely be deferred until spring when hopefully the prices will be better.
Our August site visit with the contractor was interesting as he showed us his vision for 20 of the properties. Trees that owners had marked could be left, and some unmarked trees should go. He factored in Firesmart, diversity of species, stand support, wind direction etc
To date, we have had owners of 24 properties express interest in this option. Some of these owners have told us that their neighbours are also interested, but are not on our list.
If you would like to be added to the list of interested owners, please contact Sam and Rod.

Bear Aware
Berries are done, bears are getting more desperate and bold. One tried to challenge a BMR employee on a SxS.
Please be vigilant at the transfer station. If you use a little wrist action when you toss your bag, the back side of the bin will fill, not just an overstuffed front. If the bin is full, please do not add to it.

Thank-you 87 Owners
Thank-you Jennifer Lutz for managing the zoom, and thank-you to an amazing turn out of 87 owners on the zoom expressing their views. BMR has committed to a meeting September 25th, and a valued member of the community currently the CFO of a major city, and previously CFO of a Regional District has offered to help the strata with negotiations with ownership over sewer rates.

Thank-you Brad and the Summer Ops Team
Last day of Summer Ops yesterday - thanks Brad for another great burger. I didn't ride the chair - I prefer to do that in the winter 😉.
Lot of new faces around yesterday.

FireSmart Funding
Below you will see the awarding of FireSmart funding to the Silver Star Property Owners Association. Apex also received funding in the last couple of years - not sure if it was through their community association or their Fire Brigade Society, but definitely not through the resort. I have not called my Apex contacts recently, as they have had enough on their plates this summer.
Programs up until recently have been mostly for Crown Land. We have been advised that if we formed a non-profit community association (which we had at one time), there would be more programs that we could apply/qualify for.
This has been discussed by the FireSmart Board - a community association could include all property owners, and not just Strata Corporation members. A board member has been looking into this with our Regional District Area Rep.
FESBC funding covered the clean-up of the fuel modification project adjacent to the village. Red Mountain is on the site having received FESBC money for fibre recovery and removal of material in gladed area of the ski hill.
Vaagen has advised us that there are plans for tree spacing beyond the Controlled Recreation Area in the coming years.
There are opportunities for our community, the ski area and beyond. The FireSmart Board is effectively stalled at this time.
To date, a FS grant of about $10,000 was received several years ago, resulting in the 2019 report which is a requirement to have for most applications.
A FS grant of $500 was received to fund the awareness weekend last May.
The 2010 Fred Marshall report used to be on the Powerstrata website - I took a quick look and didn't find it - if anyone wants a copy of the 2010 or 2019 report, I can send them to you.
