8:00pm Wapiti Creek Lodge

It is not too late to contribute to the cost of the 8:00pm fireworks - details on transfer to Scott are on the Cabin owners Facebook page.

Welcome Home Tony

Love this guy! I met him when he was 14, skateboard under his arm - a friend of my friend's boys.
He taught skiing and patrolled at Baldy. I was delighted to see him this afternoon. Here from Australia for a couple of weeks, for his Dad's 90th Birthday. He patrols part time at Thredbo.

My knees didn't want to ski today - I would love to have had some runs with him, but would not have followed him down CD.

Hwy 3 Re-opening with 30km/hr speed limit detour around the major washout area

 https://www.castanet.net/news/BC/591124/Highway-3-reopens-between-Hope-and-Princeton

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Enjoy your day

Thank-you to my Baldy family for your kindness and generosity. I've had hugs delivered, along with home baked cookies , ready to eat meals, meals to freeze, homemade salsa and antipasto, and a homemade special pancake mix with instructions. I also had a season supply of kindling and some garden produce delivered in the fall.

The timing was perfect yesterday, as I have already eaten all the cookies made by my niece, and the ones shipped by my sister from Toronto. ( I did share - a few).

Ken Ozanne, the "Wizard", referred to himself as an OB on a FI.  "Old bugger on a fixed income." Now that I am in that position, buying a lot of gifts is not something I can do, but I do my best to do things for my friends and this community all year long. All the visits yesterday were very much appreciated.

There is a vehicle in the village belonging to a special friend who hasn't been on the mountain for a long time. I'm so glad you are here - healing is always better on the mountain than in the city! Welcome home.

A long trip from Victoria to Baldy yesterday for one vehicle. I'm not sure which route they took, but the word to Mom and Dad was that the trip was "pretty good." They may live in the city, but Oliver and Baldy raised makes for good sensible drivers.

For many years I shovelled and  lit fires Friday nights for families arriving late , particularly those with young children. No little kids in the car last night, but happy to make things a little easier for those arriving after a long drive.

McKinney Road update

Update, thanks AIM, fresh sand, road fine if you have decent tires and take your time.

I received a call that McKinney is slick between 14 and 24 km. (below the snow line.) I have called AIM and let them know it needs sand. It was probably OK last night, but it is getting warmer down below.

Thank-you Baldy Team, enjoy Christmas Day

Brandan and Parker will have fun Christmas morning with their young children. Kudos to the Baldy Staff for organizing a staff dinner for those who don't have family close by to share the day with.

With the fresh snow, I expect Boxing Day to be very busy. Village folks, we can help. If the racks outside the lodge are full, consider going back to the cabin for lunch. If you are able, try and use your cabin washroom to shorten the lines in the lodge.

There are plans to address those issues in time for next season, hopefully there will be something to announce in the spring.

Christmas Eve

It is snowing heavily, and forecast to continue through tomorrow with "light snow" on Boxing Day. Many families are in the village, with some Baldy families on the coastal side of the challenging roads.

New to the village? If your guests are parked on the street, keep an eye on the snow removal, and when you see that the road is plowed to full width across the street, have them move their vehicles so that your side of the street can be cleared. The consequence of not moving can be a lot of shovelling.

If you start your supper a little earlier, you can join the carollers at the top of the village at 6:30, or join them as they work their way down through the village. Thank-you to Scott and Robyn of Wapiti Creek Lodge for hosting the hot chocolate at the end. I encourage you to participate, I did for many years. The last toddler I carolled with is now in her 40's.

You may have noticed that my mouth is always covered when I am skiing. Please don't try to drag me out to sing with you. I have "reactive airways". Inhaling a lot of cold air through my mouth is not good.

Enjoy your family time tomorrow, and be ready for a Pow Boxing Day.

Our Friends from OOSAR

A team from Oliver Osoyoos Search and Rescue is here today for a refresher on their winter training. Colleen tells me that the morning of the power outage, there were 14 trees across the road coming up.

Eagle is open, access to snow study area - base is officially 100cms up top

🚨Terrain update🚨
After all the hard work from our grooming and patrol teams, the North side of Eagle chair is NOW OPEN! This makes nearly all of our terrain open as we head into the holidays.
On Eagle, Southwinds remains closed until there is enough to snow to build our expert terrain park.
On sugarlump, Wizard remains closed until we receive more snow to fill in the bottom, and Dash remains closed until the cliff under the chairlift is safe enough to ski.
With Eagle now being open, we are able to get more accurate snow accumulation stats in our weather plot, and to our surprise, we now have a 100cm base at the top! Snow is forecasted to fall all week, so kick off your holiday season with a killer day(s) at Baldy!
All lifts are now in operation 7 days a week until January 4th. Night skiing/tubing on our magic carpet starts next Friday, Dec 26th and runs every Fri-Sat until 7pm
Tubing remains closed until we receive a bit more snow, but we aim to have it open sometime next week.
Need a ride to the hill? Our Eagle Express shuttle service with pickup and drop off in Osoyoos and Oliver is operating Thursdays-Sundays all season long. Check our previous post about it or get all the info on our E-store, baldymtnresort.resortstore.net.
Get up here and enjoy the Okanagans most affordable ski hill!

Ride the Eagle Tomorrow Afternoon - post from BMR

Eagle is about to take flight very very soon. We have prepped the runs and set the stage for an opening tomorrow afternoon December 18. With more snow in the forecast and plenty at the top we are excited to get things turning.

🎟️
Tickets to ride will be at the Sugarlump pricing until noon at noon we will switch to our two chair pricing. So if your looking for another reason to get outside come shred early and get a heavy discount on tickets.
🏠
A few house keeping rules as you plan to shred the best little 2 person chair in the Okanagan. (At least that's what we think)
1. It is still early season so stick to the groomed runs where it will be a much better experience
2. Anything off groomer may come back to get you so ride with caution
3. The north side will be closed so stay off this side of Eagle this is for your safety and the safety of others runs are closed for a reason
4. Have a good time out there it's going to be a stellar day with snowfall expected to hit by noon

Some of the repairs needed are in avalanche areas..................

Power outage backgrounder.........

A little bit of background for the newer families in the village. This morning was a bit of an exception in that it took longer for the Fortis page to show our outage on the map. It was also annoying that several residents calling at different times were told that they were the first to report it.

When outages have happened at night, the person answering seems to know more than the day time call centre. They appreciate whatever info you can give them.

The Telus cell tower on McKinney does not have adequate back up power supply, so you will lose cell service fairly quickly, as well as Telus internet.

If the base area loses power, China Creek Internet loses power to connect from McKinney to the village. If the base area does not lose power, I can usually connect to China Creek with my power supply back up, as the installation at the top of the mountain has more back-up power.

Get to know your neighbours. There are several full time residents (including me) who do have a land line that works when the power is out.

Winter power outages up here generally last about 5 hours. There are a few of us who drive/call around to see if the outage is localized or widespread. If you see a downed power line, don't go anywhere near it.

I fear that we are in for more outages this winter. The area where the trees came down on the lines has seen more trees fail in the last couple of years. I don't have the info at the moment as to whether the proposed FESBC project may deal with some of that this summer.

Fortis took a different approach in the village this summer - not removing danger trees that threaten the main lines, and just tipping branches of even dead trees close to their lines.

The tree situation in the village has gone beyond FireSmart. Liability and power have to be factored in. Unfortunately one owner in our village has gone to great lengths to try and convince Fortis to attend to a tree that could take out a transformer if it goes. They have been unsuccessful convincing Fortis.

Power just restored, after 5 hour outage

The power went out shortly after 6:00am this morning, and just came back on now. Cell and internet were not available. Gusty winds last night, and reports of trees on the road.

I cleaned up my cordless electric chainsaws the other day, and put them away for the winter. After the debris I saw yesterday down in the area of the 2021 burn, I'm thinking I should put one back in the truck.

Ice Cleats Recommended

Driveways, walkways, and streets have a fresh dusting of snow on top, but there is ice underneath. Moisture just starting in Oliver when I started up, road turns white around 25km, McKinney Rd.

No paid advertising on this blog............but

I discovered the Karma Fruit Co products a couple of years ago, made in Kelowna. No sugar added to their sparkling juice - just the sugar from the fruit. A good choice for someone like me who is trying not to support the big USA companies, and to cut back on sugar.

I gave samples to a number of friends and told them to get it at Costco - and then it was gone. In it's place, fruit juices made overseas.

The farm tasting bar is open 11:00 - 4:00 Wednesday thru Sunday in the winter. I drove by just in case this morning, and found a very accommodating staff member willing to sell some product to me. They make mocktails and other stuff too. All in Kelowna.

Apparently their deal with Costco is a seasonal one, up for consideration again in February.

Tradition Revived

For decades, singing carols in the village Christmas Eve was an annual event. Maybe it was covid, but it hasn't continued the last few years.

Meet at the top of the village Christmas Eve at 6:30, and sing your way down to Wapiti Creek Lodge. With a large enough group, it splits at Porcupine, continuing to collect more people along the way.

Thanks to Scott and Robyn at Wapiti Creek Lodge for hosting the hot chocolate at the end.

At least 30 years ago, we hauled a keyboard down to the lodge for my Mom to play when it was just too cold to be outside.

Thanks Prim for bringing up the idea again - Sheilagh M, you are more than welcome to lead, or just enjoy after all these years.

Change is coming........

Cooler, and current forecast is for snow accumulations Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. It appears that the coast and Fraser Valley have one more wet wave to endure, then hopefully the crews have enough time to restored the remaining damage on the highways.

Roads

Photos of the Hope-Princeton show  significant damage. Engineering assessment has apparently been done, and equipment moving in to start repairs tonight.

No pun intended, but it is a "fluid" situation. Check Drive BC, and Ministry of Transport on Facebook.

Closer to home, YRB had a grader out today, and AIM afternoon shift was sanding.

Gas still 121.9 at the bottom of  hill.

BMR FB Update

⚠️Terrain update⚠️
After the warm trend and unwanted precipitation we received recently, we must make the difficult decision to further delay the opening of eagle chair and its terrain.
As of now, we must wait for further snowfall to safely open the rest of the mountain with no precise opening date as of right now.
Going forward, we are now in 7 day a week operation and will be running the magic carpet and Sugarlump daily, with lift ticket prices remaining at our 1 chair price until Eagle chair opens.
Patrol and grooming have been hard at work making sure Eagle is ready to open the minute we have enough snow.
Make sure to do your snow dances!

Atmospheric River

I suppose I could have had a look at radar. So often weather warnings are closer to the coast, and much farther east. Last evening when I came back from town, as I started up the hill, I switched my wipers from full on to intermittent, and turned them off before I got home. The density of "high humidity flakes" was much less up here, than in town and elsewhere.

I talked to Baldy family in Kaslo last night, and they had very heavy precipitation. (51mm at Coffee Creek). The images of the Fraser Valley , various highways, and Washington State are not good, but not as bad as 2021.

I am so glad that my trip to the Island was two weeks ago.

BMR Operations Update from FB

Our magic carpet will not be in operation for Thursday and Friday of this week and expect to have it running for Saturday operations onwards. Sugarlump will spin from 9 till 3:30.

❄️
We are working hard towards opening eagle as soon as possible with patrol and grooming out on the mountain ensuring all hazards are marked and snow coverage is perfect. We will have updates on Eagle by Thursday if we have the snow coverage to do so in the lower half of the mountain.
