Hello Baldy Babes,
Mother Nature
presented us with a beautiful morning to ride the Eagle Chairlift to the top.
We bundled up for the chilly temperature but warmed up as soon as we began our
shoe. Cheryl led us through the Baldy Trail where we had fun doing
"The Wave" video by Joanne for the Top Peak Challenge contest. A
quick stop at the Bench and the Hut before heading back to the Lodge for lunch
and to celebrate Chloe's birthday. Hilary supplied the party hats and Cheryl
baked the birthday cupcakes.
Happy Birthday
Chloe!
Remember to sign
up for next Monday by Wednesday if you didn't today: Baldy Babes Facebook group
or Mindy.w@icloud.com
Looking forward to
seeing your smiling faces next Monday!
Take Care, Marian
Tyler and Bee bought a condo at Baldy last spring, just prior to Tyler's cancer diagnosis. He's had a rough year of treatment and surgeries, the most recent completed last week in Vancouver. In between surgeries, he managed to fit in a month at Baldy, where he built the great terrain park features as well as doing some of the main grooming. A go fund me was set up to ease some of the financial burden for Tyler while he has been unable to work. Here is the link. His post op Facebook photo looks good, and we wish him all the best in his recovery.
If you don't have a season's pass, the spring pass may be a good option for you - check with BMR ASAP.
Winemakers Cup - A team effort of the Alpine Club, volunteers and BMR pulled off another successful Winemaker's Cup race and lunch today. Next stop for the participants is wine and dine in Osoyoos.
Slack Country is Back next weekend.
Owners renting next weekend - please talk to your guests about parking, and the route back to your property.
The Winemaker's Cup runs this Saturday February 25th, and will be a busy time - the event sold out early.
"The Baldy Alpine Club is looking for some extra hands Friday and Saturday to help prepare course and monitor gates for the Winemakers Cup. This is a Baldy tradition and we sure would appreciate the help and need volunteers.
A few hours Friday helping Orion and Ted set the course and
roughly 9.30-2pm Saturday race day."
The driveway was scraped down to flat today by a bigger machine as my machine struggles with the cement when this slop hardens. |
Thanks Anne W for doing a major clean up at Gilly's Hut, and hauling out garbage and recyclables.
Hey - if you can pack it in, you can pack it out. Please clean up after yourselves.
Decades ago, we had "Powder Week" - open every day for the week starting with President's Day. We needed some extra school days to fit in all of the school groups, and post secondary reading breaks often coincided. O&G had their tree planting team meetings here that week, and the bartender knew to stock up on Corona.
Those were fun times, and Mother Nature co-operated most years. I don't know how many of the cabin owners children were off "sick" that week.
We have powder today, and more is falling, so Thursday should be great. (bundle up, forecast is for cold)
Skiing was great today, even with some gusty winds. It is still snowing ( and blowing ) - should be a good day Monday. No Baldy Babes Monday - Family Day.
When we removed a memorial plaque from a broken tree today, I flagged the tree. We were unable to reach and remove the screws. Any nails or screws in timber that ends up in a chipper or mill can have serious consequences.
Make some plans for Spring Break - bring a hand saw or pole saw to limb up some trees, and remove nails and screw from any trees in your yard that have held signs or bird feeders, but may be destined for chipping or a mill.
The banks are high. When exiting your driveway or walkway, please proceed slowly. Vehicle traffic can not see you until part of you or your vehicle protrudes on to the roadway.
Hello Baldy Babes,
What began as a
sunny morning quickly changed to a snowy finish today. We trekked through the
Frisbee Golf Course reaching the new trail to Gruhl's Pool. The twists and
turns through the trees was a challenge.
We will not meet
next Monday February 20th because it's Family Day.
We will meet on
February 27th and weather permitting, take the Eagle Chairlift to the top of
Mt. Baldy. The cost for a one way ride is $10 (discount rate for BB This date) if you don't have a Season Pass.
We are asking you to bring a colourful, goofy hat or a boa or both because we
will be taking the MacKenzie Top Peak Challenges: Limbo, Jumping Jacks, Conga
Line and having a videographer recording us to earn points for Mt. Baldy Team.
Mt. Baldy is part
of the MacKenzie Top Peak Challenge to win cash prizes for the mountain. If you
vote/nominate Mt. Baldy points are earned for the prizes.

It looks like Phoenix has some opening days this month when Baldy is closed.
The lift ticket may be free, but be sure to spend some money in their cafeteria.
Last time I went, I took the Highway route to the Phoenix turnoff. I came back the shorter back road, only after checking with a local that it was plowed.
Either way, Greenwood is on the way home, and the Copper Eagle is well worth the stop if they are open. Best butter tarts ever!

On a clear day, you can see Baldy.
I complimented a skier the other day, thinking she was doing very well with a titanium knee. Turns out she also has two titanium hips as well. We talked about wanting to ski as long as we can, and I told her there was an 88 year old on the slopes that day.
I missed Jerry - I was a couple of chairs from the top when he skied down, and I didn't catch him! Jerry had some great runs with Mike. Many of Jerry's volunteer hours on the mountain over the years involved a chainsaw. "Forney's" was his project, and it had a blind entrance, so you had to know where it was. At a later time, it was opened up and a sign erected, so Jerry's secret stash was no more.
When Borderline Ski Club raised the funds to re-start the McKinney Tee in the early nineties, Jerry led the crew clearing the runs once again. He told me at the end of the day that they had left trees spaced on the "Kettle" so the kids had something to ski around.
Many of Mike's volunteer hours on the mountain involved ski racing. It has been strange the last few years to hear a voice other than Mike's at the start gate.
Thanks to Todd Weeks for capturing these young octogenarians skiing together. 88 year old in the lead, 86 year old following.
Another one too young. Cam was a proud ski Dad with daughter Caprice as a Baldy Racer in the Alpine Club, and later as a ski instructor with the Baldy Snow School.
Cam's other role at Baldy was with Fortis. One of those smiling, friendly fellows who showed up in all kinds of weather to get our power back on.
I didn't know Cam was sick. I thought maybe he had retired, or just missed the Baldy call outs this winter.
Our thoughts are with Caprice, Tracey, family and friends.
On Thursday February 2nd, 2023, Mr. Cameron Louis Brown of Osoyoos passed away surrounded by his family and good friend at the age of 64.
He was predeceased by his father, Fred Brown; father-in-law, Don Miller, his grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Cameron will be fondly remembered by his loving family: daughter, Caprice Brown; wife Tracey Brown; mother, Marie Brown (nee Traxler); sisters, Ashleigh Whitworth and Dena Brown; mom-in-law Myrna Miller; brothers-in-law, Brad (Carol) Miller, Scott (Carla) Miller; niece and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, close friends; Dan (Debi) Kelndorfer, Ed Nowasiad, Blaine Roberts, Scott Minshull and countless more. His dog Cody will be lost without his best friend.
With his big smile and rosy cheeks, Cam loved to laugh. He also loved making others laugh with his zany sense of humour. He had a generous, gentle nature and was always there to help anyone. Cameron loved being able to help others obtain their dreams and goals by sharing his vast amount of knowledge and experience, but being a dad to his daughter Caprice was his #1 love, hobby and interest.
He lived an adventurous life, both work and play. He loved to travel and had many amazing trips to exotic places including Australia, Costa Rica, Fiji, and Hawaii. His most recent trips took him all over Mexico; to the Dominican Republic; Cuba and into the U.S. He loved the outdoors, skiing, golfing, biking, and was up for pretty much anything.
Cam was a conscientious hard worker. His career began in Calgary as a Lineman working for Ace Construction, TransAlta, AltaLink, then in 2007, moved to Oliver, BC to work for FortisBC.
He assisted in the recovery of the Turks and Caicos after Hurricane Irma in 2017. As a first responder, he also assisted after many fires and floods swept through the Okanagan/Similkameen valley. His retirement from Fortis was just on the horizon.
Cameron was a IBEW 213 union member; a Nancy Greene Racing/ Mt. Baldy Ski team volunteer; a dance dad at the Dance Studio in Oliver.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday February 24th, 2023 at the Oliver Community Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations are accepted through the Canadian Cancer Society or The National Emphysema Foundation.
Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family or by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com

A special day. The bus was coming up through the fog, and when they reached Baldy the sun was shining. An early morning lift start, and the sound of Christmas Carols could be heard all around the ski area.

During a recent power line on the ground incident, an adult who was protecting the scene was observed fairly close to the power line, prompting some young people to express concern. The young ones have watched the BC Hydro TV ads.
Hello Baldy Babes,
Hilary led
thirty-one Baldy Babes through the Village to the Trails. We climbed up to the
Meadow Trail enjoying the scenery and warmer temperature. A stop at the
Stripper Pole for photos and down to the Webster Trail taking us back to the
Lodge.
Today's lunch of
Pasta with Chicken Alfredo sauce with soup or salad was delicious. Thank you
Mindy, Chloe and all the kitchen staff for taking such good care of us today.
If you didn't sign
up today for next week, please let Mindy know by Wednesday if you are attending
on the Baldy Babes Facebook page or email Mindy at Mindy.ward@icloud.com
Looking forward to
seeing your smiling faces next week.
